Hello all, I just purchased my first 4Runner, a 96 Limited. I loved these trucks for a long time and finally got one and I'm loving it.
When I bought it I noticed it had the Toyota VIP 3000 alarm on it, but did not have the remote for it. In the deal with buying it the Toyota dealership agreed to get me a new remote, which they did. My question is that in the manual for the alarm it tells me that there is a Peizo "chipper", a indicator that lets you know when you lock/arm the system. Well mine doesnt work. I did what the manual asked in terms of turing it on, but it still does not chirp. Anyone else have this problem, or is it that this year vehical doesnt have that option on it. I asked the dealership but they really didnt have a answer.

i think someone had this same problem a while ago. try searching for it, it should come up with an answer.

I did do a search before posting but the only topics I could find were turning "off" the beep. Only thing that i did come up with is possibly the unit that actually makes the beep may be bad.

In searching found out that the second button on the remote is supposed to operate the rear window. Just walked out to the truck to find that doesnt work either. Im faily positive that it does have the RS3000 system in itm It had the manual in the glove box. Mabey for the 96 year it doesnt have these two options.

I dont think the rear window roll down was programmed untill 99+ models. My 98 has the second buttion but doesnt do anything either.

As for the chirp, mine doesnt work properly either. It will chirp sometimes and sometimes wont. I believe I just have a loose connection to the chriping device, BUT i cannot find where it is coming from. I havent purchased shop manuals yet either, once I do I will figure out where it is and see if i can fix it. While many complain that the chirp is loud and annoying I like to be able to hit the buttion and hear the car lock rather than always having to stare at it to see if it locks..

Well I found the chirpper today, not quite sure if this is the stock chirpper or not though.

Its resembles a red screw on bottle cap. Its a attached to 2 wires, a power and a ground that go straight through the firewall, from there im not sure.

Figured I throw in a pic of her, you can tell which is the dominat veh of the two.

Awesome man, thanks for the pic. That led me right to mine. Only mine has some foam-like stuff around it. I think i see where the wires have been taped aswell. Might explain why it doesnt work most the time..

Cool Im glad the Pic helped. Yeah mine had some foam bits around it, most were worn off. The wires did have electrical tape on them, but they do seem to be sodered (sp?).

Info on the piezo chirpper. Floyd Bell Inc., the seem to make several different models, this one being the m80 ir m100 series

I did actually get the chirpper to work for a brief moment of time, but it has stopped.

I followed the wire through the firewall, and noticed that it appeared to have been worked on aswell, it was taped up and looked like it was cut and reattached. Maybe to get it through the firewall, but i pulled on the wire a little bit and it hasnt stopped beeping when i press the lock button sense. I'll have to see how it does after driving it. I wont be able to get you results untill Monday though.

I'm also going to ask the dealer next time i'm by if I cant get the wiring and maybe a new chirper to rewire it.


Also, can someone send me a picture or describe where and how there alarm brain is located. Mine is under my drivers seat, but sitting. on top of a harness that once housed the "brain" of my awesome CARPHONE (taken out now). Just wanted to know the place it goes from the factory.

Mine is under the drivers seat as well, I'll see about getting you some pictures tomorrow sometime. I do know that the brain had 3 groups of wires attached, one large plug and two smaller ones. they led directly underneth the carpet to where I havent a clue. My feeling now is the chirpper itself is bad, I can place my ear directly to it and I can make out it "beeping", so I'm guessing age and weather has worn on it.
