Just bought my first 4 runner 2 weeks ago, 1998 Limited w/150,000 miles. I have been detailing it and planning upgrades.

A question I have is about tire wear. The truck has 20,000 miles on a new set of tires and shows inside wear worse than outside wear on the tires. What would be best to check first? Alignment? Ive already checked pressures and they are ok.

Welcome!!!! I would check the alignment...my tires did the same thing...it will drive a lot better too. Could need to be rotated too.

Ball Joints?

Are Ball Joints a regular problem with T4R's? I have had other vehicles that ball joints were notoriously bad and needed replacement. My vehicle has 150k on it and Im not sure if they have ever been done.

Definitely get an alignment. Does your vehicle drive pretty straight when you take your hands off the steering wheel? Look at all the ball joints, cv boots, etc and look for any type of leaks or wear.

Alignment

It drives straight down the highway but has some vibration in the wheel at times. THe tires are abnormally worn on the very inside edge and slightly on the outside edge. Ive checked pressure and they are at the proper psi.

Ill have to jack up the front end and check for play top to bottom on the front wheels to check ball joints? What other tell-tale signs are there for ball joints? CV boots look good, almost new looking.

if you have to ask if you should replace your ball joints then you should do it regardless if they seem fine. with 3rd gens its more of a maintenance item and only use oem toyota parts it will be one less thing you have to worry about..

Lift her up. Get out crow bar and start trying to move every joint and check for play. If any movement replace that part with Toyota OEM. Places to check are UBJ, LBJ, ITRE, OTRE, LCA and UCA bushings. Anything over 150k miles will must likely need all this. Mine had 180k and was solid. Once lift went on and started wheeling all these parts failed including a LBJ causing my tire to fall off which damaged my steering rack and CV.
