New Mexico 4Runner Owners Thread

Lots of pics and details on the suspension and exterior in the build thread linked above, but shoot me a PM or ask for anything specific and I'll post it up. I was thinking about starting around 4K just to see what happened, but for a quick, local deal I'd go lower. I'll be around this weekend if anyone wants to check it out...

Spring in NM has arrived. Snow, rain, and a lot of wind. I need to finish my fence and gates but weather like this is a good excuse to go for a cruise in the mountains. Saturday's little trip was on Horace Mesa which is at the foot of Mt Taylor and east of Grants. Also a little different Saturday, my wife drove all of it as she is rekindling an interest in going offroad. She's also planning on driving on some trails this summer in Ouray so I felt she should practice some. I snapped a few pics while we were up there when the dust/snow wasn't blowing. Unfortunately, some of my pics are a garbled digital mess and I'm not sure what that's about (thanks iphone).

Looking over Grants. Hard to tell from the pics but there is a sharp cliff just in front of us and some very strong wind gusts so this is as close as we got. The wind gusts were coming from every direction so I didn't want to take a chance.

There's actually a small lake/pond on the mesa but unfortunately this is as close as we could get because it's now private property.

I am planning an off-roading/camping trip to Ouray 4th of July weekend with a group of people from work. It's a couple weeks before the FJ Summit. Let me know if you want to come.

Hey everyone! I'm new to this whole forum, but liking it so far... I would be interested in getting some local opinions about a project I'm dealing with:

So.... the wife backed into something the other day and gouged a hole through the rear plastic bumper cover right at the seam where the plastic meets the metal, just a couple inches from the wheel well.

I'm torn between three options for a fix;
1: Go the body shop route, replace plastic, paint and hope for a good match. (I'm a little OCD and the smallest paint mis-match will drive me crazy if the paint doesn't match perfectly)

2: Bushwacker fender flares, the damage is close enough to the edge that the flare would cover it up. The hesitation here is that I would also need to add wheel spacers to widen the stance to match the new wider fenders. I have heard mixed opinions about wheel spacers and bearing issues. May also lead to tire rub issues up front.

3: Go with the new Southern Style Off-Road rear bumper. There is only one prototype of this in production at the moment, but they are now taking orders for the final product. I like this, but it's the most expensive option, and I'm not sure how it will look without the tire carrier and jerry cans. ( I DEFINITELY don't have the budget for those add-ons at the moment!)

Any help in this decision making process would be greatly appreciated, especially from locals!

It's kind of funny you post this because just the other day something similar happened to my 4th gen. I volunteered to go to the store for my wife. While at the store, my wife opened up a drawer on my big Snap-on toolbox to get a hammer so she could hang a picture or something. While I'm fine with her getting my tools out, she has a bad habit of leaving the drawers out. Our garage isn't very big so I park close to my toolboxes so she has plenty of room to drive in and out. So I come back from the store and back up into the garage and crunch. Luckily, the Snap on drawer didn't get damaged and it missed the rear bumper cover by a hair but it did punch a hole in the mudflap. It sucks but I'm planning a full rear bumper in the future anyway.
RioRunner, I would see how much a body shop would charge to fix it. Do you want to involve your insurance? If so, you could get a quote then order a nice steel replacement bumper. I'm not really a fan of the bushwackers. There are a few other bumpers for the 5th gen besides the SSS if you want some other options.

I really don't want to go through insurance for this thing, and I'm kind of on the same page as you with the fender flares.

I have seen a couple other bumper options (Shrockworks, CBI) but those require cutting the original factory plastic and keeping the upper portion. This doesn't work for my situation because the damage is in that upper area. Have you come across any other bumpers that replace 100% of the plastic?

Gotcha. I see what you mean. Looks like SSS is the only FULL replacement. I thought there were a couple options that replaced the whole bumper. Guess I never paid enough attention. A few more options are Hefty Fab Works, Relentless Fab, and Addicted Offroad. Maybe one of them would be willing to do a full replacement.

Hey guys, not sure if anyone is looking but I'm selling a set of new (sub-100mi) 35's. I bought a set of 315/75/16 General Grabber AT2s on a whim last month and I'm not liking the setup on my truck. Too many trade offs I just don't want to deal with right now...

Looking for $700 obo, located in Las Cruces. I might trade for 33's if you've got a nice set?

Level kit and alignment done.

Hey guys,

I know a few of you have some early 4Runners and other Toyotas...

There's a kid on craigslist with a bunch of Toyota FSM's for sale. I grabbed an electrical wiring diagram for my '01 and the Vol 1 & 2 repair manuals for the 99 model year 4Runner (90% the info is applicable to all years of the 3rd gen) for $80.

The story is that he is a lube tech at Toyota (had his work shirt on when I showed up) and his employer, American Toyota, is tossing all their hard copy FSMs in the trash in favor of electronic versions. This kid went dumpster diving because he knew they had value, and now he's selling them on craigslist. I probably could have got him down lower than $80 for what I purchased, but it was still a good deal at that price and I respect the kids hustle and the fact that he didn't let all those good FSMs go to waste.

He has a bunch of 1st gen Tacoma model years, Land Cruiser stuff, some Supra manuals, and a whole bunch of Toyota cars and early pickups.

Thanks for this one Big Fish. I just messaged him.

Hey local folks,

I have a front bumper for '99-'02 models up for grabs. It has slight accident damage from my Wife bumping somebody at a stoplight. I repaired the damage and have the old bumper taking up space in the garage.

FREE!!!! Come and get it.. send me a PM if interested and I'll get you the address.

Lift instal options

Does anyone in Albuquerque know the options for installing lifts locally or would anyone be able to help a novice install on our own

When I was shopping around for places to install my lift I was quoted on average $150 per hour with around 4 hours to complete. Saved the $600 and installed with a friend's help. Took about 5 and a half hours but that was taking plenty of breaks and pictures along the way. A good set of air tools and patience will get the job done if you're up for the challenge. There is endless help on this website with plenty of pictures so do as much research before hand so you can be a little more confident going in to it. It is definitely a 2 person job because there's a couple things that get a bit challenging like pushing down on the lower control arm while finagling the strut back in to place. I'm dealing with some medical issues right now so I wouldn't be much help for heavy lifting but I'm good at handing tools and fetching beer haha. If you have any questions I'll do best to answer them.

would you and your friend want to help myself install my lift to save a college student 600 bucks? I'll bring the beer! or any one else? I already have my springs installed on the shock so in theory it should just be as easy as swapping it all out:thumb3::thumb3:
