New muffler louder than stock?

So my old muffler I had which was stock had a hole in it and was rusted so it had to be replaced. So I got an after market muffler installed on it and it’s louder than the stock one. Is this normal?

Very Common depending on what the After market muffler specs were.

I don't think there's an aftermarket muffler out there that will be as quiet as the stock one.

I installed a new Walker Muffler on my '97 and it's a little louder that my '98 which still has the original exhaust... While the Walker is a little louder the only way I can tell is if I have them running side by side. What brand did you install?

As long as you didn't break anything and got the exhaust resealed. You have any new exhaust leaks after the repair. As sometimes other parts are thin and new leaks develop from having things moved and apart..

Aftermarket mufflers are almost all louder. The factory muffler is a baffled system which takes the sound waves from the exhaust to collide and cancel each other out. The exhaust gas has to travel around plates and tubes to exit but creates a quieter sound. An aftermarket muffler usually has a pipe with perforated holes in it surrounded by insulation. Most are a straight-through design which prioritizes exhaust gas flow over sound suppression.

Yes I wish it wasn't 3 to 4k for a complete OEM exhaust or I would have them.
On the plus side you have a dealership install the new OEM lifetime warranty. {If that's a plus}

I prefer the OEM muffler myself as well. As around here the Walker exhaust will not make it 4 years without rusting off and my stainless steel Chinese tailpipe that was put on in March has rust spots on it. It's not even full blown winter yet.

I replaced my OEM with a Walker and yes definitely more rumble at highway speed than stock, not so noticeable around town. The weight difference was noticeable too at installation which may have been a clue.

I think the cheap way around this would be to find someone selling a stock exhaust off of a new Tacoma or something similar that they replaced with aftermarket and have a muffler shop either weld it in or make up all new piping. You'd probably be in it anywhere from 100-700 bucks depending how fancy you got.

yeah I’m going to take my vehicle back to them on Monday it is way too loud and it has a droning noise every time I hit the gas. I’m not sure what the brand or name of the muffler is. It was just a universal muffler they had in stock. Does anyone know what’s the closest to stock muffler they have out there? I want something quiet. Thanks for all the reply and help guys. Might have an exhaust leak. I know I am not happy with my Walker muffler and it sounding like nobody is really happy with their any after market exhausts either. It's a shame is too expensive to run the OEM ones. As they seem like the most quiet exhausts out there.


My Walker tailpipe didn't make 3 years and it rotted off one of these days I probably loose my walker muffler as it now just turned 4 years old.

The ebay chinese tailpipe that I installed this march that is stainless steel has rust marks on it already. I figured it was low grade stainless for its cost. I am trying to see if it will last more then 5 years before its junk if it does, it's better then the walker exhaust well in this environment anyhow.


I am wondering if a custom made stainless steel exhaust system would be the way to go.
