Need advice on Muffler for a 2017

I need some advice. I have a 2017 Trd off-road. My muffler has a small hole and rust around it. What is the best alternative muffler to OEM? Oem is 600 bucks for the part alone. I don’t want to buy a cheap replacement and end up having replace again next year. Whats does everyone recommend? Stay with OEM or some kind of cheap aftermarket?

A repair mighi buy you months while you search.
Treat the rust with Ospho treatment which converts rust to a stable grey material. Fill hole and surround patch with a 2 part epoxy. Probably one with a filler that is suitable for temperature.

Thanks I’ll look into that. Would you stick with OEM? Or would you look at cheaper options? Are there any good options out there?

how small is this hole? pinhole? my rx350 had a pinhole exhaust leak. I had the lexus dealer put some sort of compound on it and they expected that to only last a short period of time. it's been there for 2 years and still doesn't leak so I haven't done anything about it. for very small holes that compound like jb can work

if it's small enough you can try some compound. if it's also not too large just go to a muffler shop and have them patch it. it won't cost you much. dealers will just replace, won't patch

No, it looks like a rust spot that broke open. It’s probably an inch and a half. Are there any downsides to patching it? Will it last?

You may be able to get by with a patch, but as others have said, get an OEM muffler.
If you get some cheap muffler, you will only be replacing it...... you will not like the tone.

My local Toyota dealer has the muffler for $600. For almost the same price I can get a magna flow cat back Overland system. It’s lighter in weight, better clearance and stainless steel. Wouldn’t that be better? or would you still stick to OEM. My 2017 off-road only has 52,000 miles and the muffler is rusted already. OEM didnt Last What I thought it would

My 2 cents - do your research on an aftermarket muffler/exhaust. A lot of them will drone or have an undesirable (to you) tone. Ideally, listen to one in person or look at as many You Tubes as you can.

It looks like you live in Pa? How is the salt on the roads in winter? If your muffler is rusted through, how is the rest of the truck? Seeing you got about 9 years out of the first one (assuming it is original) you should get another 9 out of a new OEM. Maybe rinse it off periodically in winter and you should get more. But if the rest of the truck is rusting, in 9 years the muffler maybe the least of your rust issues.

Also, shop around, you can likely do quite a bit better on price than your dealer. I see part # 17420-31360 for $430 and up online. I do not know if this is your correct part number - but it gives you an idea.

Yes, I live in Pennsylvania. The rust is not too bad just surface rust…. but I go over it every year fluid film. And paint. The hole in the muffler is not bad. It just looks like a little rust spot. I guess my question is ….will OEM be better than a stainless magna flow unit? The magnaflow doesn’t have drone from what I hear. You can also tweak the sounds. There are different adjustments you can make on it. I also like the fact, the magna flow is lighter in weight compared to OEM. I tow boats and trailers

Oem will be better, with no possible negatives.

Aftermarket systems/mufflers are know to have drawbacks regarding droning. Where it sounds really noisy at certain rpms.

The OEM system, including the muffler, is stainless steel. The aftermarket systems will not last any longer than the OEM, but will likely sound worse. I have tried several different mufflers, ended up back with the OEM.

False economy. I've installed enough aftermarket exhausts to know the quality and spec can't touch OEM. NVH is not much of a concern in the aftermarket either, so I hope you have an appetite for exhaust drone. I think you'll appreciate the tested solution with known results. Sounds like you're driving through harsh stuff. I've heard of people getting their exhausts ceramic coated. Not sure how well that will help if it rusts from inside out though.

That drone will drive you bonkers! Get OEM. Used from a junkyard, ebay, etc. Plenty of online salvage sites that ship also.

It's 2025, be thankful it's only $600. Junkyards these days are ridiculous and will probably want $350 if they decide to even sell it. Add shipping from a rust free region and you're cooked. Just buy a new OEM during a fall 25% off sale from Valdosta Toyota or similar.
