New power plant?

Ideally they'd keep the 4L, maybe get rid of the filter oil cartridge, and give the transmission 6 or 8 gears.

If there were any question that a hybrid should easily out pull a traditional V8 - take a look at how badly the 2021 F150 with the hybrid system runs away from a Ram 1500 Hemi.

I know it's not a great video quality. But it's not even close. It won't be long before these hybrids are embarrassing the HD diesels. My guess is that we'll actually see the end of the HD truck separation in the next generation and everyone will basically offer a Tundra type model that covers both half ton and HD truck duty.

Given that the Tundra is almost certainly going to have a 400hp twin turbo v6 and hybrid system - I expect very similar performance.

I really wish Toyota would start dropping some teasers about the Gen 6 powerplant. Some hype/hope would be nice.

Normally by now we'd have lots of spy shots and various early production rumors if something new was in the works for a 2022 model year product. Even if it's a 2023 MY, there's still no rumors or anything out there about new drivetrains. The lack of any info doesn't give me any warm fuzzy feelings about something new being developed. The new IS sedans keeping the same engine I had way back in 2007 for now the 3rd consecutive generation of the same vehicle is probably a little bit of a foreshadow of what we'll get.

OTOH the LC300 was supposed to be officially released this summer and we still don't even know what it looks like, what engines it'll have, or even if it'll be sold in North America. So Toyota has been remarkably tight lipped about that one and it's supposedly production ready or very near. Same with the Tundra. The lack of much of any solid info at this point is pretty unusual too.

The 3.5 ecoboost is just a much stronger motor than the 5.7L Hemi and would out pull it even without the assistance of the hybrid system. The hybrid piece still adds power but only 47hp from what I've read.

I would welcome a Hybrid powerplant as an option on the next 4runner. Pretty much a requirement if they want decent fuel economy out of a tall boxy body on frame SUV.

Apparently VW is releasing an EV Tiguan so I wouldn't be surprised to see Toyota do something similar. As much as I like IC engines, having worked for a diesel manufacturer for 30 years, the end is near.

VW just announced their EV SUV. It's actually a smaller than the current Tiguan - so probably about the size of the original Tiguan, which was just a tall Golf.

The ID4 is basically a lifted hatchback. It's based off the ID3, which I think is Polo sized.

The powertrain consists of a 4.0L V6 engine that delivers 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. torque combined with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It is available exclusively with automatic transmission, as manual is not a current option.

Popular trims TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro offer many resources for when you want to drive and play off the beaten path. Multi-terrain select and crawl control help guide you in low-traction situations. One feature demanded for by loyalists is locking rear differential, and 4Runner TRD owners will be pleased this is standard. Also standard on TRD models is active traction control and hill start assist.

Way to fail the Turing test.

Might be hidden behind a paywall, see link below, but the President of Toyota basically threw cold water on the idea of all vehicles quickly turning electric, citing infrastructure and power generating challenges.

Based on these comments, my bet is on a hybrid that delivers 300+ for both horsepower and torque.

Worst case scenario would be a turbo four. I do a little towing and I think the jury is very much out on whether these little four cylinder turbos can handle the long-term stress of moving big, heavy vehicles for 10+ years.

New Land Rovers lite models? May not be a true locker and more an A-Trac situation?

The Honda Pilot and whatever the smaller one is also I think have a lockable rear diff. They use a torque vectoring diff. IIRC if both clutches are locked - it's fully locked. It's actually a very neat differential. It also has a 2 speed planetary gearset on the front end. So the rear diff alone can have as many as 4 different gear ratios and also fully lock or torque vector.

The Rav4 also has a torque vectoring rear diff, but I don't think it can fully lock up. It's quite a bit different design from the Honda. Honda has a spool that then sends power to each side planetary and the clutches adjust for speed difference. Toyota uses a center differential and then planetaries on each side so the Toyota can be active or passive. The Honda cannot be passive. The Toyota version can operate at 2 different gear ratios and/or torque vector (overspeed one side).

I'd guess the jeep diff has something like the Honda version than can fully lock.

Frankly - it's kinda hard to imagine a situation where you'd really benefit from torque vectoring in any of these crossovers. So I'm not sure why Toyota would put an expensive complex torque vectoring rear diff in a 205hp front wheel drive biased Rav4. But they do for who knows what purpose.

I was wondering this myself, so I searched a bit for why people get banned. Then I saw people getting banned for asking why people got banned, so...
Too bad he is gone, I thought his posts were interesting.

I guess I won't ask then... :hiding:

unfortunately the admins are deadset on banning educated, reasonable members instead of douchebags like dick in ridgewood

Yeah, I don't recall anything ban-worthy from him. Certainly there have been some really ridiculous and inflammatory comments from others who are still here. Could be something unrelated to comments on the forum. Usually the reason is obvious.
