New Puppy

We've got a Chocolate Lab that's almost nine months old that we take to the dog park pretty often so he can wear himself out. Sunday while we were there a guy had a little Yellow Lab that was a little cutie and Chip was really having a good time with her. I had pretty much forgotten about her once we had made our way home, but it didn't take my wife long before she was online looking at ads for puppies. It didn't take long before we were back in the 4Runner and on our way "just to look," which we both pretty much knew meant that we were bringing a puppy home that night. Anyways, we are now the proud new parents of a 6 week old Yellow Lab. We haven't named her yet so if you have any suggestions we're still looking. Here she is-

I know someone who just got one. Looks just like that. They named theirs Maddy, short for Madison.

They get along really well. It's like they've known each other all six weeks that she's been alive. By "get along well" you mean trying to eat each other right?

Yeah, mine too. And then one day I caved and she got the first one. Now look at me. I've got two of them within a six month period.

I'm assuming Chip is as in Choclate Chip rather than short for Charles...

These are stupid/corny but work the Yellow in... We were so stuck with ours she's named Summer like the warm, yellow summer sun. She gets called (and answers to) "Yellow Dog" too.
1) Call her Meri (pr:Mary) short for Meringue as in Yellow Lemon Meringue Pie.
2) Call her YellowCake. Cake for short; everyone will think your screaming at someone named Kate. Always a glow and full of energy like Yellow Cake Uranium.

Good luck... Once you know the dog a little bit the right name will just 'happen'. She's a great looking pup.

Well we finally settled on a name- Bailey. We had a few names we were thinking about but Bailey seemed to fit a little better than the others and she responded to it.

She is the sweetest most vicious little puppy I have ever known. It is actually a little scary when she gets to growling at you. She's getting a little better as we work with her, but she is still giving Chip hell. I'm just waiting for him to swallow her head one of these days.

Labs are great dogs! I had two of them. My female (black) passed away at about 12 1/2 years of age back in 2007. My male (also black) is still alive and well at 13 1/2 years old. He is totally deaf and has some arthritis, but is otherwise okay. He looks funny with his snout being all grey.....but he is still very cute. He used to fetch until about two years ago, but will still chase a biscuit.

At about 90 pounds, he is quite strong and has a good presence; though all he would do is lick you to death. If you have children in or around your house, a Labrador Retriever is one of the best dogs to have. Although they like a lot of exercise and have "happy tail" that will clear everything off a coffee table, they are much better around kids than most smaller dogs. You will end up buying dog food by the truckload, however. Labs have voracious appetites.


A friend of mine has a Yellow Lab named Holly -- which I think is an awesome name for a female dog. You already picked another name (Bailey), though; so go ahead and run with it. Good luck!!!!


P.S. Be sure to get both of them fixed (spayed/neutered). There are far too many homeless pets out there that still need a home.

Jeff, sorry to hear about Shadow. I know it should be a long way off before I have to worry about that, but I'm already not looking forward to it.
Chip used to eat like crazy, but we found this dog food called "Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul" and now he eats like 1/3 as much as he used to. At first we thought he didn't like it, but it is the only food he'll eat. He's still gaining weight so he's not undernourished. I think it doesn't have a lot of fillers in it so it must be more satisfying. And the bonus, besides going through a lot less food, his piles of crap aren't as huge as they were on the old food. Bailey won't eat any other food now either. We had some of the old stuff left over (Pedigree Puppy) and thought that maybe we could get rid of it with Bailey but she wouldn't eat it. So if anyone cares I would definitely recommend that food.
