New replacement steering wheel for 3rd gen. Pics finally! mounting options?

I'm working with a factory that will do a new leather wrapped (any color) wood/carbon, etc wheel, can even pick the stitching color, for all 3rd gen 4runners.

My question is for 98-02 4 spoke wheels (96-97 is 2 spoke) there seems to be two different options, two different 4 spoke wheels that mount different.

I’m trying to figure out if certain 98-02 years have certain ones or did Toyota use them randomly where you’d need to take airbag cover off to verify first?

Below are the two versions for 98-02 4 spoke. Does anyone know what 98-02 years get what? I also attached a close-up of the two mounting options, option 1 and option 2.

This would be so sweet. What's the ballpark cost gonna be for a standard black leather?
And how does the process go? They have cores they rewrap, then you send them your core once you get the rewrapped wheel?
I am not familiar with the two different wheel frames used on the '98-02 4-spoke wheels, but I will pull the airbag on my '01 to see which frame it has- if that would help you out.

Thanks Tyler. Working on cost and will update this post when I do.

About 10-14 days, yes, core exchange is one way. Send you the new wheel, and you send your's back within a week, OR, if you want to KEEP your wheel and get the new one it add's $200. Most do the core as it keeps cost down.

Also, I think from the pic, the spokes look slightly flared in the one version possibly too.

Yea, the issue with the 3rd gen is the leather starts falling apart and most cheaper options don't look that great or are very labor intensive to try and fix it. This has the solid surface at the top and the bottom, right where you'd be grabbing, so the new wheel will never wear out.

There's a company in Texas that refurb's steering wheels. You send yours to them, no core exchange plan. For a 01 T4R OEM look, baseball stitch, any color, turn around is 1-2 wk. $299+ shipping. Custom, expect to pay more, didn't ask cost, turn around 2-3 wk know that much.

Just throwing it out there for apple to apple comparison when we hear what your prices are.

Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the leather without taking the steering wheel off? I do leatherwork as a hobby and have considered redoing mine myself. Just cut the stitches and pull the old one off, re-glue and stitch up the new one and tuck the extra from the spokes under the horn cover. I not sure if that's how it works, or if anyone has tried this.

If you find someone who knows what they are doing removing the steering wheel should be cheap and easy. My local shop here in San Diego, The Truck Shop on Miramar charged me $40 to swap out my steering wheel and airbag over to the new wheel I bought off eBay. If the person has done this swap before it can be very quick. $20 removal, $20 re-install at a later point .... not bad :beer:

Yea, not everything is on the site, still working out pricing before it's posted, but I'm gonna give the first few guys a nice price. Also, if you guys didn't know, I can get just about any item for any vehicle these days. Anything you see on autoanything/car id, summit, jegs, etc, and I'll beat their prices. The website only shows 10%, so always ask, I don't mind helping you guys out.

Cool, I can check, and will reply in this thread but this stuff is done by machine like OEM and doing by hand is very hard. There are posts on there with people that have done it with hands bleeding and a lot of time, it's just about impossible to get it to look like an OEM product that way especially when that would be a first attempt for most.

Not at all, competition makes us better. Glad I'm less expensive, but with the above option that means you can't drive you truck for 3 weeks as you won't have a wheel, which most can't do.

This is a custom one by one thing and can't be done that way - I already asked about it. You don't have to do wood, this customer wanted to as when he grips the wood it won't ever look old like leather would where most grab at 10-12 o'clock positions. So, I guess if you do wood or gloss black, or whatever you don't have to ever worry about the leather EVER wearing out.

Price for all leather I'm going to try and do for $269.99. Adding wood (can do the limited color, or any other, or gloss black, or any other gloss color, would add about $69.

Try and about, don't mean that's what it'll cost. Having a core exchange program adds overhead costs to business operations.
What's the business history of company your wanting to get this going with, so we have a idea if we'll get what's promised, always a concern.
The company I referenced 20+ yrs in the business, doing same thing including
center console lids, plastic panels/parts, dash pads, Custom builders use them. Makes it worth the wait.

Can't do it, checked on it for ya. Honestly though, doing without a machine is hard to get good results on an item like this without a lot of finesse.

It's all good, been in business for 19 years, 1999. I've seen so much junk over the years, you just have to be careful. That's why I love this forum. When you're doing a custom item, if it is sub par, word spreads like fire. Now, there is a customer that bought this that will be replying in here with installed pics also. I'm not going to brag about how awesome the quality is, eventhough it is, I'll let the customers speak. Should have the details worked out soon and will follow up with ya.

The issue is for 99% of people, they can't go without a vehicle for weeks waiting on a wheel - for most it's their daily driver. So, I help out buy sending the wheel first, and not even charging them up front for the core, only if they never return it SO everyone is happy. Anyone else would charge for the core up front and then you're double the costs on your credit card, which hurts.

Are you thinking of Craft Customs? (Not linking to as to not stop on OP's business, just asking if that's the outfit as I have a non-T4R wheel needing help and I'm always interested in more vendors.
