New Shocks and Struts Suggestion

I know this is an old thread but I used this thread and a few other old threads here when looking to replace my shocks and struts last week so I wanted to add my experience for others doing the same in the future.
I ended up installing KYB gas-a-just shocks/struts on my 97 and I am beyond happy with how it rides. My 4runner is stock with slightly bigger bfg all terrains.
It's smooth but no body roll in the corners. Highly recommend. All the parts were $254.

I second that motion for the KYB sensa-trac. They seem to ride good on most any Toyota.

I would add bilstein hd4600 here as well, for stock height. Not sure why folks tend to over look them. They have the same valving as the 5100 and ride great on road and forest service roads. I've even had them paired with ome 906 and they did well.

Second vote for 4600's as a 'near OEM' style replacement. Put them on my 4Runner when it was still my dad's (not interested in a lift, it was 2WD at the time, etc.). No complaints. Lasted ~80k miles before the rears started leaking, if I remember right - so not great for longevity.
