New Shocks Needed.

Stock suspension no lift. Probably going with Tokico shocks.
The deal is my passenger side rear shock broke so I need to replace it. Going to replace both rear shocks obviously, but my question is should I replace all 4 shocks while I'm getting it done? My mechanic only says I only need to replace the rear ones. What do you guys think?

Replace all four while you are under there.

If it happened to me I'd replace all 4 with Trekmasters from Shox.com $270. The rear shock breaking like yours is common. When it happens to me I'll get 4 Trekmasters. I do belive the Trekmasters will ride harsher than the OEM shocks but they are the softest non-OEM option I'm aware of. The rear OEM shocks are surpising cheap at $40 each.

Your mechaic is correct that the cheapest option is to replace just the rears with OEM's

But if you have over 150,000 miles on the fronts they should be replaced at some point. Just do it all at once.

You MUST replace struts in pairs, in a perfect world if you have the cash you'd replace them all at the same time. Be as good to your truck as you can afford to.

Just FYI, AJUSA.com has all 4 Bilstein HD's for $261 to your door. Tokico's are good too, just a matter of personal preference.

Wow, this is crazy. I JUST got my rear shocks swapped out because my right rear shock snapped on my 1999 Highlander.

I'm on a budget (mainly because my MKIV Supra is out of storage now, so there goes my wallet haha), so I went with Monroe Sensa-Trac's in the rear and left the OEM front struts in place.

It was only $220 installed for both (small local shop, 1 hr labor - other shops were $350+ so shop around), and the truck drives like new. Ride height is unchanged (as I expected). If you're tight on funds, just replace the rears and leave the fronts until a little later (it was another $400 installed for Monroe's in the front with an alignment).

Just my $.02. I wanted Bilstein's but it's my daily and mainly stays on the highway.

Well dropped off the truck and talked to the old man mechanic, the father and he said yes you should replace all 4 shocks as the truck has 166,000 miles and is 15 years old and has never had the shocks/struts replaced. Left it up to him to decide.
They replaced the rear shocks and the front shocks & struts.This is what they replaced them with:

Hopefully they will last just as long as my old ones did. Did it in one day for me and a bill for $700. Not too bad I guess. It was like $350 for parts & $350 for labor. Truck feels like a brand new vehicle.
