New Stock Size Limited AT Tire

I just came across these in a random search. According to the rep I spoke with at Toyo, they just started manufacturing these Open Country AT II tires in 245/60R20 in January.

Not cheap, but possibly a good AT option if you want to stay with the stock limited wheel and not push the manufacturer recommendation envelope. There are no tread width specs, but I was told that the section width is 9.8”.

I have these on my 14 limited and love em. They came brand new on them when I bought the truck certified pre-owned. I figured they were stock size, but I guess not. I'll have to go look what size they are now that you posted this. I've had them on my Tacoma before this and they're great tires.

Trail Edition 17x7.5" wheels and tires

A 20" wheel is not the best for off-road. The problem an AT tire on a 20" rims is it's hard to air them down very far before you start dinging the rims.
What you could do is get a set of Trail Edition 17x7.5" wheels with decent off-road tires for those off-road and overland trips. I happen to have a set of 4 TE alloy wheels and tires Dunlop 265/70R17 (stock tire) with about 26,000 miles on them plus the matching spare steel wheel and tire with zero miles for sale. A 20" wheel is not the best for off-road. The problem an AT tire on a 20" rims is it's hard to air them down very far before you start dinging the rims.

There is no question that the 17" wheels and corresponding tire size are better for off-road use. The Toyos might be a good compromise tire though, especially for those of us in areas where we might encounter deep snow and pothole-ridden roads, but do not venture off-road with any regularity. I threw around the idea of putting trail rims on mine. I've seen them mounted on limiteds and they look good. But, I don't want to store a second set of tires/wheels and deal with tpms re-initiation if I want to switch back and forth (and avoid the dash light). Plus, there's some additional loss of on-road performance with the higher profile tire.

I just did a check before I walked into work, and my tires are 245/60/20 and I've had them since September. They're Toyo Open Country AT II.

100% agree. I actually like the look of the Limited wheels, and their performance on the road. 95% of my driving is on road, so they suit my purposes.

Thanks for checking! I guess the Toyo rep I spoke to just threw out a guess of January. Most places cannot get these tires and are completely unaware of them. Would you be willing to post a couple pics?

I'm really glad mine came with a brand new set on it already. I'm wanting something a little larger, maybe 275, but the tread is brand new on these and I know they last forever. I didn't find them on Discount Tire, but I did find them on another site. The link is below.

Finally! Its a good choice for people who hit dirt once or twice a year. I run 18s and dont always air down.

This is a nice looking tire. I moved to BFG KO2s on 17" wheels a few months ago, but I often find these tires a little too hard for every day street driving.

I go back and forth on putting on the 20s and just swapping on the KO2s when I'm offroading.

Thank you for posting...decision made. I'm getting these before next winter. I figure I might as well get 12K miles or so out of the 684s that came with mine since spring is in sight. My guess is that other tire companies might manufacture ATs in this size if they sell…there will be at least 9 model years of 4Runner Limiteds with this tire size.

The '14 limited that the mrs. drives came with the Yokos. They lasted well (54K) and did fine in rain and snow, but gave a jittery ride and were hard to look at. A friend described them as looking like fisher price tires, which isn’t a stretch. I replaced them with Dueler H/L Alenzas and it's a night and day difference from the yokos. The handling and ride are much more sure-footed with the alenzas, they have a bigger footprint in the same size (7.7” vs. 7.3” tread width), and are an overall great highway tire. There’s even more of a difference from the bridgestone dueler 684s, which with under 500 miles hydroplaned on the highway where the alenzas did not (same time and place). I have had several bridgestone tires (AT, max perf summer, all-season, etc.) that I was very happy with, but the 684s truly leave something to be desired. The tirerack hydroplaning resistance ratings are not farfetched from the limited experience I have with them.

I live in the Texas hill country and have tried to put my truck sideways in the rain and it just won't slip. Mind you, I have a limited 4x4 and coming from an SR5 P 4x4 was a huge difference, but I found it amazing that I could not get the tires to lose traction at all.
