New T4R for me / INTRO Post

Good morning, 4runner land!

I'm finally able to post an intro thread! At first I was a bit annoyed by the requirement, but in the end, I think it's well suited as it forces you to become involved.

Anyway.

I'm now a proud owner of a 1999 Limited 4D. Shes got 170k miles, new tires, new rotors and soon to be getting a new exhaust. It has the E-Locker (seems you guys are kinda into that thing) and all around, very well maintained.

No rot under it, LBJ's are tight (according to TOYO Tech Person).

I do have a valve gasket leak that I'll be taking care of soon(ish). Going to try and tighten it down to spec first and see if that takes care of it.

Anyway, here's my intro photo.

I do have one question. How do I make my lower front bumper turn signals work all the time? Seems some of you have this running with your Driving Lights turned on. The truck looks so much better with them acting as driving lights.

Welcome!

Forget what the Toyo tech guy said, unless you know for a fact that your LBJ's have been replaced in the last 100k miles, replace them (OEM only).

And replace your radiator. I also like to replace all fluids when I get a new vehicle unless I got proof that something was changed. Start fresh, fluid is cheap compared to mechanical components.

I would definitely go OEM. They really aren't that expensive and you'll know it's high quality.

Congrats on owning a 3rd gen T4R. With respect to the radiator, I would recommend a DENSO or KOYO. I bought my KOYO from Amazon many, many years ago (installed in 2012 and now with 118K miles on the radiator) and it has worked flawlessly and was a perfect fit. The OE radiators are pricey! (I would also recommend if you are replacing the radiator, do a complete flush of the system. I use Thermocure from Walmart. I drain the coolant, add the ThermorCure, distilled water (only) and run for about 30 minutes and cycle the heat on and off to clean out the heater core. Do three rinses with distilled water and then add the Toyota red coolant mixture into your new radiator and system) Also consider putting in an external transmission cooler if you are replacing the radiator! You will find SO MUCH helpful stuff on T4R.org. It's a fabulous site with tons of great information and helpful members!

Thanks for the advise! I've watched quite a few videos from Tim The Tool Man or whomever. He has a great video for flushing the system. I very much plan to do that when I change mine out.

As for the additional Trans Cooler. Is it recommend to go that route? What about if you live in a cold weather region? I ask because I've seen some threads discussing weather conditions and that part.

I'll just say (to troll others) LOL That you picked the best year, nothing's better than a 99. ;-) I should know, I have 3. :biggrin2: The bottom right is your twin. Silver e-locked Limited.

There are a variety of “schools of thought” for the external transmission cooler. For me, I bypassed the radiator entirely. However, we do not have many real cold days here in Alabama. I did it as a preventative against the pink milkshake. Did this back in 2007 and never had an issue. Trans temperature runs about 174-194 on the hottest days here.
