New tires/painted wheels

Spent all weekend sanding the rust and salt off my wheels and decided to paint them gunmetal instead of black like I originally planned. Knowing my tires were in bad shape already, I found a nail in 2 of them when I had them off so I went out and picked up some all terrains. I painted the calipers silver and added some trd badges and painted the front center part of bumper black. I love the way it came it. Next is a FJ suspension I'm waiting to install.

The rims look great. Personally, I prefer the sidewalls facing the other way hiding the white letters but to each their own. What paint did you use for the rims?

Thanks guys, I used VHT engine enamel paint I bought at Autozone. 3 coats of paint 2 coats of clear.

Nice job/look, +1 on the white letters. What size BFG's did you go with?

I went with 265/70/17. I do most driving around the city so I didn't want anything to big.

I wonder how the rims will hold up to daily driving and such. I really wanted to paint my limited 18"s gun metal on my SRP..

If you take the time to prep the surfaces correctly they will hold up just fine. The prep is the most important part, followed by light coats and curing time. Look up the Duplicolor videos on Youtube. They do a good job of walking you through the steps. Those 18"s would look really good in GM.

I plasti-dipped my wheels and then painted on top of the dip, held up perfectly for 2.5 years and 25k miles. I removed it to put new tires on. Like Momo said, do it right and will be great. I slapped everything together and mine did great.

Nice, Yeah I was also going to suggest Plasti-Dipping the wheels,as there is no prep needed. The better the prep work at the beginning for painted wheels, the better it will look, not to mention LAST. :reddance:

i too didnt think i would be a fan of the raised white letters on the outside.

man i need to paint my rims gunmetal. i just need to figure out the best diy process to do so. last thing i want is paint flaking off..
