New Tires

I have a 2001 4Runner with about 145K miles on it. I drive it about 55 miles per day, mostly highway driving, with some city driving on weekends. I don't plan to have the truck more than another year at the most (wife wants a newer, safer vehicle), but I think I need new tires. What do you recommend for my situation?

You'll want to have good tires on it for re-sale. You'd be surprised how much a name brand tire that has plenty of tread left can help you make a sale.

I'd get a set of stock size (265/70R16) Firestone Destination LE's. Should be about $500. And to be honest, I've made a sale of a 4Runner based solely on the fact that it had good Michelin's on it. A set of Michelin LTX M/S's isn't THAT much...about $700 usually.
 
Thanks!! I had a set of those on last time, now I have a set of Yokohama Geolanders. I'd like to stay right around $500 out the door if I can.
 
Yokohama Geolander AT/S is definitely the way to go. Check out your local Tire Discounters if they are in your area.
 
Just stick with a major name brand and you probably can't go wrong. Most people would rather NOT hassle with having to get new tires right after they buy a car....so having a good set of name brand tires on it really helps the "comfort" level of the buyer and makes them a lot more willing to buy your specific vehicle.
 
FYI: I'm in Fairfield CT if anyone has a recommendation on where to purchase or knows of a good deal. Bought my last set at Town Fair Tire.
 
I like yokohama's their ht/s seems to be a good tire. But you say you want safer vehicle.. after rolling and hitting an embankment head on my '97 4runner and seeing the way it held up and allowed me to walk away practically unharmed I may never drive a different vehicle.

I plan to get a new 4Runner...mine is 2WD, living in CT I'd like a 4WD, plus with a new baby we want all the new airbags, etc...

The ONLY thing I was suspect about about after wrecking was that the air bags seemed to be pretty dinky, the driver one didnt even touch me
 
I also live in CT. I will never buy tires from Town Fair Tire ever again. They are expensive and their service stinks. My brother-in-law actually sued them because he lost a tire on his Pathfinder because they put different lug nuts on the truck.
I live in Hartford County so I can't suggest anything in your area. But I would determine the tire you want, then shop around and get quotes from independent tire shops and see who gives you the best deal and go with them. The Yokohama's are a good tire and so is the Firestone Destination AT. The Firestone's are going to cost you a little more.
 
I'd check discounttiredirect.com, tirerack.com and e-Bay. Get the tire you want at the best price. Then go here and call a few places off that list nearby for a good price on mounting and balancing on a Hunter Roadforce machine.

I do like my Michelin MS/2's I bought this way. I did the Michelin CrossTerrains I had before those the same way.

I would definitely check your local craigslist ... stock size tires with great tread can often be found on mine for dirt cheap
 
Thanks! Now I just need to figure out which ones to buy! I'm going for an oil change tomorrow (and the VSC/TRAC/Check engine lights are on) so I'll ask about tires, not at a dealership.
 
Make sure and get a P type tire (not an LT). Better road performance for less money.

If you buy new it should be almost automatic as the lower price and typical tire dealer practice both push in that direction, but you never know. A couple of the popular tires are LT only (BFG AT, Duratrac).
 
So now the time has come to get new tires...

These prices were quoted when I had it serviced this past week....
Do I want any of these, or look for others?

Nitto Terra Grappler - $190 each
Yokohama Geolander - $187 each (this is what I currently have)
Cooper Discover AT3 - $178 each
Cooper Discover HT - $170 each
Fusion SUV Tire - $155 each
National Tire (Cooper wholesale) - $160 each

If I get one of these, I'll look elsewhere for better pricing....

This is for a 2001 2WD, I drive about 50 miles per day on the highway, don't do any off-roading.
 
Don't know if it helps you in CT any but I bought a pair of Falken Zeix ST/Z 04 mounted and balanced with road hazard for $172 each here in OK. 265 70 16s..

Bfg rugged terrains (not rugged trails) are 176 on walmart.com

Also hankook dynapro Atm are 162. Should have free site to your local store shipping
