New Toy/Project: 99 LTD w/Elocker-Saved from Junkyard

Picked this up the other day. 256k with elocker. I asked PO if he ever took it offroad. He said "I once went down a gravel road with it". He had owned it for 15 years. I asked him if he ever used the Elocker and pointed to the button. His response: "what is that? I've never touched it. What does it do exactly?" Needless to say, I got a good (maybe great) deal on the truck. However, I could not get the elocker to engage. Not surprising for 15 years without use. It sounds like the magnets have come loose, as when it is pushed, it only engages for a split second. So I will have to take it off and have a look at it. I'm not sure if I feel more sorry for this fine truck being stuck on pavement most of its life or the for previous owner who wasted 15 years of his life that he could've spent wheeling.

The truck also has some frame rust that I'll have to repair, and has a massive oil leak from the valve cover gasket that is dripping on the exhaust manifold and burning off the oil and also needs a radiator and cap. I haven't decided exactly what I'll do with it, either use it around the farm and for those occasional trips to the mall, or maybe swap the axles to my 2000 Limited (and then still use it around the farm). Maybe I will fix it up and use it as a daily driver and see how cheap I can possibly make that happen.

The Imperial Jade looks good, and sitting next to my 2000, I can definitely tell the 99 tall coils make a difference. Here are a few pics I shot in the rain.

What's the locker doing? If you hear a noise coming from the axle, that's a pretty good sign. If the magnets have come loose you likely wouldn't hear anything at all.

Was the truck moving when you did this? You usually have to drive in a slow S shape to get it to click in.

When it's working properly, the motor just runs momentarily to load up a clock spring (locker light is flashing), that spring then waits until the teeth on the locking ring align to slide it over and engage it (locker light turns steady).

When I test drove it, I tried to engage it in 4hi, and then since read that it has two safeties that are required to engage it: under 5mph speed, and in 4lo. I put it in 4lo and did slow figure 8's forward and backwards through the pasture last night but couldn't get it to engage. My theory is that one magnet has come loose, allowing it to turn part way, but then loses contact. It only runs for maybe a quarter second. Surely that can't be long enough?

Edit: the light on the dash flashes when the button is pushed to engage, so it isn't a wiring issue. I also tried it while sitting still.

Blinking light means it is trying to engage. The rail that the actuator engages may be hung up from lack of exercise. I would pop the actuator off, check it for operation and also use a flat head to move the rail inside diff...you'll have to prop up one wheel to do this.

glad you saved on too... I just did the same on a 99 limited with e-locker. Kinda the same thing in that I didn't really know what I needed it for or what to do with it...Turns out, It's probably going to be a daily driver so I can go more crazy with my other 99

That is awesome! I think this is going to be the short term plan. I will fix the frame, do a little maintenance here and there, and then go ahead and license it and drive it while I park my 2000 and lift it over the winter. That way I can take as much time with the lift install as necessary, and doing things like rebooting the CVs while I'm there. This one has 256k on it, but I think they've all been easy miles.

Haha, definitely some luck. It helps my dad checks Craigslist daily and sends me anything he thinks might interest me, so that's how I found this one. I did have to haul it about 100 miles.

Yes, he checks it daily while drinking his coffee. I gave $1500 with a full tank of gas. And IJM is one of my favorites, although Natural White may top it. This one was in an STL suburb, I generally only watch STL Craigslist because most local vehicles have usually been beat to absolute crap on our gravel roads and poorly maintained and pothole riddled state highways.

Ok, I think its pretty popular among jeep guys. I went to CO for the first time this summer and wheeled some completely stock. There are so many trails out there, once you've been out there, its really hard to compare that to anything around here.

I've never been to Webb City, but my friends from Hannibal still remember getting whipped in the football state championship game by y'all 8 or 10 years ago!

I'm thinking of picking up a set of OME 890s for the rear. Pairing with the tall 99 fronts, it should provide a reasonable amount of rake, and if I want to bring up the front later, I can always go to 881s. Does anyone think it would be possible to stuff 33s with the stock 99 front coils? I have searched and have been unable to find any examples of it on here, but surely someone has tried it, right???

I am planning to work on the truck this weekend, if am able to, I'll post more pics and an update.

Noticed someone mentioned SMORR. It is a good place to go and located outside of Seymour. They have something like 800 acres. Trails for all types. Have never wheeled my 3rd generation there but have taken my 1st generation there 3 or 4 times. Back to topic....
