New TPS installed - weirdness ensues

Hey folks, I was getting DTC for TPS sensor going out on 3.4 auto engine. Mechanically speaking, I noticed that sometimes it felt like I was losing my accelerator or at least full control of the throttle body. I replaced the TPS with aftermarket one from PepBoys and it seemed fine initially. Lately, I have noticed a "miss" type feeling at only 1800-2200 RPM while steadily rolling down the road. If i accelerate, no problem. Decelerate, no problem. Only under steady pace.....which is basically everywhere you drive. I read another users experience with a very similar issue. His thread made note of the MAF as potentially causing the problem too. My question is, am I more likely seeing a defect in the new TPS or an additional problem with the MAF going out? MAF is OEM as far as I know and is attached to new (3,000mi now) K&N CAI. I do have the bluetooth sensor and "Dash Command" but not sure exactly what to watch for when troubleshooting these. I don't suppose there are any polarity issues or any settings of any kind that need to take place when installing the new TPS? I did have to torque the butterfly throttle body armature a little to get the new TPS installed. The truck idles perfect, accerates perfect etc.....just kinda drops out the throttle at those RPM ranges. Frustrating. What say you good people? Oh and no new codes are coming in......odd.:pout:

Your issue might very well be your MAF sensor. K&N filters come pre-oiled and gunk up MAF sensors quite commonly. Try pulling the two screws that hold your sensor on and clean it. If no avail, try purchasing one from a local parts store and check their warranty beforehand.
hockeyman: A simple test I've heard is to unplug the MAF sensor and start the truck. If the problem is your sensor, your truck should run better than with the MAF connected. It will throw CEL though. I have not verified this with our 4Runners but it worked on my fiancées Camry.

I'd also switch out the after market tps for a oem denso one to rule out the tps... I don't think they are that expensive. myself and most forum members find that sticking with oem for parts like these is the best way forward.

Sticking with OEM parts had crossed my mind several times actually. I think I will go pick one up today.

Update - Fixed so far!

Thanks again for the input folks. I swapped out the after market TPS today with OEM Toyota part ($73) and cleaned the MAF just because it sounded like a good idea. Idle is smoother and I feel I have complete control restored to the throttle. The "miss" feeling is gone on so far on a 3mi test drive. Will know for sure after a longer haul, but I think the culprit was the after market TPS.

Lesson - Pay the $10 extra bucks in this case to have OEM.

I appreciate your input. Hope I can return the favor some day. :drummer:

My money is that cleaning your MAF fixed the issue.

I haven't had any issues out of my AutoZone TPS. Strange that when I had my '97 the TPS went out, and then the same thing happened to my '99 a couple months ago. AutoZone TPS both times, and never had an issue after that.
