I recently installed a salvaged OEM 1GR engine and A340F transmission in my 4th gen 4Runner. Both run well, but I’m experiencing two persistent issues:
1. Transmission Delay After Slowing Down:
The transmission shifts perfectly with no delay during normal driving. However, after slowing down, when I try to accelerate, most of the time the engine revs for about a second before the transmission engages. It feels like the transmission isn’t always recognizing that the car is slowing down and stays in a higher gear until I press the gas pedal, at which point it finally downshifts.
I suspected the throttle body or TPS might be causing a slow signal to the transmission, because they came from the old engine, so I replaced them, but this didn’t fix the issue.
2. Steering Wheel Freeplay:
I had this problem for years, there’s a noticeable 1–2 cm freeplay in the steering wheel. I can rotate the wheel slightly in either direction from any position by barely touching it with a pinky, and this movement has no effect on the wheels. I’ve checked or replaced most of the steering components, but the freeplay persists.
Has anyone experienced similar issues or can offer guidance on troubleshooting these problems?
