New Wheel Installation

Hi all,

I've got a question about new wheel installations, tire rotations, etc...

I bought a new 2013 4Runner and a second set of rims and studded winter tires for the ice up north.... The extra rims are OEM SR5 rims and came shipped with a black plastic ring that snaps in the back of the rim, lugs, etc.

I've rotated and swapped my own rims around my whole life, but I've never had rims that have a black plastic insert that snap in them...

Do I just pop these in the back of the rim, slide the rim on and torque the wheels down? The tire shop guys that mounted my winter studded tires suggested I put the black plastic piece on the hub first, then install rim slowly tightening it evenly, pulling the black plastic piece onto the rim... which seems backwards to me.

On a similar note, what is the purpose of this? I'm sure there will be a lot of differences as I get used to toyota brand of trucks...

Thanks!

Update...

Pulled the rims off today for the first time and the OEM rims have no such Hub Centric Black plastic insert installed.... I've certainly read and learned a lot over that past day or so of reading about lug vs. hub centric... never heard of them.

My second set of OEM SR5 rims bolted right up with no issues....

The inserts the guy sent me with the second hand rims, must be for a different vehcile application.

I torqued 'em down to 85 ft-lbs as I saw three different torque settings in the manual (81,83,97 ft-lbs).... seems to be what most of you on here recommended...
