Slower traffic keep right is the most important rule for highway safety imo. Apparently the Germans think so as well since police very strictly enforce this rule on the Autobahn. Jersey drivers are usually good with this and if you happen upon one sticking in the left lane, flash your high beams and they will move.

Kudos to the Germans! I lived over there many years ago, and have been back twice to visit. Amazing how much more safer it is on the Autobahn than on our Interstate highways - despite them having a much higher average speed.

The only bad thing about Germans, though, is that they drive about 90 to 100 mph in thick fog. Now that is just nuts!

If you "flash to pass" here in VA, most people will ignore you, deliberately slow down just to irritate you or flip you the bird. I don't know if it is a Southern thing or what, but most people here seem to have nothing to do and all day to do it. It's been awhile since I drove through NJ, but I do know they're a bit better about lane usage.

Same goes for PA - at least on the turnpike. They have signs that say, "Keep Right - Pass Left" -- which is quite easy even for stupid drivers to understand. The "Slower Traffic Keep Right" signs here in VA are easy to understand as well, but nobody considers themselves to be 'slow traffic' and end up ignoring them altogether. Doh!


If every driver adhered to the "Keep Right Except To Pass" rule and everyone used directional signals, our crash & fatality rate would probably plummet so much that speed limits would hardly even be necessary on open highways. (Hey, I can dream....right?)
