New York Drivers Suck

I'm from NY and I only got one wrong. (#9--I wasn't sure how far ahead you should turn on your turn signal) I guessed wrong.
BTW, I think when it comes to NY, the bad drivers are mostly found in the city. Then again, it's hard to drive anywhere you have that many cars jammed into such a small area.

I'm in NY (Western NY) and I got a 95% on it.
NY's drivers have a bad rep. because of the congestion. In any environment, as you increase the population, the individual members of that environment have to become more competitive in order to survive. As a result, our normal driving patterns look very aggressive to observers from outside the area.

Bad surveys make the news all the time. This just happens to be one of them. It amazes me that people who conduct surveys often don't understand anything about statistics.
But either way, there are a lot of bad drivers in the NY/NJ metro area. I see it all the time. But I also see bad driver's all over the place when I'm driving out of state too. I also don't necessarily equate passing a written test with being a good driver. Someone can pass that written test with flying colors and still be a horrible driver. I had an ex-girlfriend who was exactly like that. She was smart as hell, but couldn't drive to save her life.

Bad Drivers
VA, MD and DC drivers are pretty bad - in comparison to just about anywhere.
The two most egregious offenses are as follows:
1. Failure to keep right (preventing faster vehicles from passing). Far too many people get out in the left-hand lane and just sit there. It is a law here that you have to yield to overtaking vehicles, but nobody obeys "Slower Traffic Keep Right" signs that are peppered all over the highways. This is the law regardless of the posted speed limit. We end up with everyone else bobbing & weaving, passing on the right and overall road rage resulting from one or two idiots who don't have any lane discipline.
2. Failure to signal lane change or turn. Almost every near-miss I have had is a result of this simple mistake by someone who is too ignorant, lazy or stupid to get their finger out of the fries long enough to move the turn signal lever. The rest of us are supposed to be clairvoyant, I guess.
Both are infractions under VA law, but you will almost never see anyone get stopped for either of them.
P.S. I have driven through NYC during rush hour and it pales in comparison to the debauchery and skullduggery displayed by Northern VA/DC/Baltimore drivers.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not encouraging bad driving, going too fast for conditions, tailgating or anything of the sort. But the fact remains that there is a crapload of people on the highways who simply shouldn't be. They are terrified or modern highway speeds, or too focused on yakking on their cell phone, or just too befuddled in general to competently drive a car at a reasonable speed. Yet, enforcement is not targeted at these people, it is instead targeted at the driver who is competent & focused on what he is doing who just wants to get by these morons so he can get from point A to point B in a reasonable time frame.

You would not believe the stupidity that I witness every day on the road (especially I-95, I-66 and I-495). The dolts of society find their way onto the highway and two or three of them can actually cause a four-mile backup behind them - and none of them are even smart enough to know or care.
After being passed on the right numerous times, it would seem that someone might wake up and realize they are in the wrong lane......but nope; they'll continue tooling down the road without a clue. Even though what they are doing is both illegal and unsafe, they'll never get stopped or cited for it. Political correctness has made its way to the Interstate. Gads!

After being in law enforcement in the NOVA area, I will agree that the people in VA/DC/MD are the worst. I grew up in NY and they dont even compare. MD is the worst by a LONG SHOT! I swear they take lessons to shove a car in-between cars where there is no room just for fun, and they are the only people that I know that can go from the slow lane, allllllll the way to the fast lane, do 85mph, then go alllllll the way back to the slow lane to get off at an exit and not gain any ground on me. WTF?! I mean---REALLY?!

True dat! I live in the Richmond area, but travel extensively throughout NoVa with my job -- and I drive big trucks for a living (both semis and three-axle straight trucks). I would say that I-66, VA 28, VA 123 and I-95 are among the worst roads. It is amazing how close some people come to "buying the farm" - yet they continue without a freaking clue.

I can be in a fully-loaded big rig and some sap will fly past me, cut right in front of me (without signaling, of course) and then slam on their brakes to make an exit ramp. I've had people do this in front of cops, but nothing is ever done. The people who drive too slowly (impeding traffic flow) in the center or left-hand lane cause a backup as well; but they escape the wrath of Virginia's finest as well. Both actions are definitely far worse then someone exceeding the speed limit. It's extra-frustrating in a big truck because we can't use the "hammer lane" in most places.
By the way, I am also former law enforcement; but I was just a deputy sheriff in a rural county without a police department. Nothing like Fairfax or Prince William; that's for sure!
I don't think there's anyplace like I-95 around the 160MM for excitement on a weekday morning.

Yeah, I'm in Upstate NY, and the area is still very nice as far as scenery, etc. goes, but that's about all.
Economically, the area is dying as a result of a socialist state government which is controlled downstate by and for the interests of the various freeloaders that live of the fruits of others' labor, including public assistance recipients, government employees & their unions, particularly the educational unions.
New Yorks' overall taxes are the highest in the nation, and as a result, businesses & jobs are leaving the area in droves for more business friendly states.
So, yeah, this is a nice place for viewing nature's beauty, it's a hellhole to try to make a living.
And yes, we can still have the occasionally nasty winter!

, I completely agree. CA drivers are MUCH better than VA. Its not uncommon for me to be on 95 and be tailgated by a semi going 75mph. I'll look at my rearview and see a giant grate, so I roll down my rear window to investigate and lo and behold, its a SEMI. I can't believe how fast drivers drive in VA.

The best way to avoid that is to stay in the right-most lane possible. VA is famous for "left lane hogs" who lack common courtesy, ettiquette and lane discipline. If you are in anything but the right lane of I-95, the best thing to do is move to the right and allow faster traffic to pass (no matter how fast those fools are going). Believe it or not, that is the law here - but it goes largely unenforced.
As for going 75 mph, it is probably not me 'tailgating' you; as I drive a governed truck. Some only go 69 mph, and we have two that will hit 75 mph if pushed hard enough and there is enough distance.
Commercial vehicles over 13 tons gross weight are prohibited from using the hammer lane in most places along I-95, so it could only be one of us in the center lane.
