Hey all,
I have a 1995 4Runner SR5. The engine is only 8 years old or so(after dad totaled car).
I have little to know experience working with cars but am confident in my ability to do relatively easy repairs/inspections myself.
I am basically trying to get my 4Runner to run close to its maximum potential(mpg mostly/reliablilty etc). I am doing this because the engine is realtively new, the paint job is brand new, and I ****ing love the car.
I have cosmetic fix ups I want to do(interior and exterior) but want to get it running smoothly first.
Firstly, I did have the cat converter sawed off a few months ago and had a replacement installed for $200(installation included).
It seems to be getting really poor gas mileage and runs rough(not something that seemed to just happen when I got the new cat converter, but is possible(i think, you tell me). When idling, it switches between a relatively smooth idle to shaking the whole car(not violently but you can feel it). The interval is about 15 seconds or so I'd say. I have take it into the shop a couple times in the last 6 months and saw some improvement each time(basic tune ups/diagnostics). It burns though oil quickly but I keep up with it and check on every fill up.
tl;dr It just doesn't sound like it's running as well as I remember it sounding in the past and the gas mileage is poor. The idling is rough as well. What do I do/what do I make sure my mechanic takes a look at.
