Newbie Help-- Valve Gasket and Trans Oil Pan Gasket

All, I just picked up my first 4Runner and could not be more excited. After looking everything over, I know I need to take care of a seeping valve cover gasket and also a seeping tranny oil pan gasket.

I have been reading all over the forums and discovering how to do the valve cover gasket on my own. My parts list is below. My question is, what tools do I need? Also, is anyone in SoCal willing to help me out? I would provide the food, drinks, and parts

In addition to the items below, should I replace the spark plugs? What about the cam seals, is that possible? I have 139,000 miles on a 2002 SR5.

My order consists of :
1-PCV Valve, Part #12204-62010 Might as well replace it while I'm doing this
1-PCV Grommet, Part # 90480-18001 Just in case the old one is in bad shape
2-Valve Cover Gaskets (both the L & R side are the same part), Part #11213-62020
6-Spark Plug Tube Gaskets, Part # 11193-16010 No need to replace as of yet but it is recommended
2-Intake Plenum Gaskets (both the upper & lower are the same part), Part # 17176-62040
16-Washer Seals (for the valve cover bolts) Part # 90210-05007 While I'm at it, might as well change them
2 Camshaft housing plug: 11188-62010
1 FIPG: 00295-00103


For the transmission, it should be easier. Pull the plug and drain everything. Drop the pan, remove sealant, put silicone, place new gasket and replace pan, correct? Should I put a new filter in? What parts do I need for this?

How can I clean the engine off and the undercarriage off?

I am concerned one of the O-Rings might be bad, but I am not really sure how to take care of it.

I know nothing about the transmission other than that you can drain, remove the pan, remove the seal, redo the seal, and put it back...

Valve covers though CodyX36 and I did ours both on a Sunday a few weeks back... It's a rather simple task, just a bit that goes into it...

To start you'll need a set of metric wrenchs (14mm I believe) to undo the cables on the TB.

Then you may need some angled pliers for the hoses on the TB.

Depending on the bolts on your TB you'll either need a 10mm socket, or an allen wrench set.

For the manifold you'll need 10mm and 12mm sockets


For the valve covers you'll need either a 10mm or 12mm socket... forget the exact size...

For the cam seal plugs it's a 10mm socket

To pull the half moons out, not sure what they're called, a pair of pliers will suffice

To do the spark plug tube seals you'll want a flat head and a rubber mallet.

For re-assembly you'll want a torque wrench.

I may have forgot something... Hopefully not.

The valve covers are a fairly simple job, just time consuming, and requires attention to detail (keeping things clean, applying FIPG where needed, etc). Watch Timmy's video to get familiar.

Where are you in So Ca? If you're close, I'm happy to help if you need it (not the whole job, but if you need help/guidance along the way).
