Next 4 runner build?

So, I wanted to try a Toyota 4 runner and did. I have a 1995 4 runner non 4x4 and had the engine rebuilt.

I like the 4 runner a lot and regret not getting a 4x4. The only thing I don't like is the 3.0 engine (weak)

I am thinking about starting another build in 4x4. My question to you folks is, what year should I consider?

I want a 4x4 and a much stronger engine....

What say you guys/gals?

It is hard to comment when everyone is in different financial situations. My take is buy a new 4Runner and drive it for a couple of decades.

The 4.0L on the 5th gen is stronger than the 3.0, but it reads like you want A LOT stronger. So what porquipine said. 4th Gen with a V8.

Ive thought about that too...

How are the V6 3.4s compared to the 3.0?

To be polite, night and day!

Mine had 3.0 auto to start, now 3.4 manual. I didn't supercharge right away so I can tell you without hesitation the 3.4 is better power, better for maintenance, stronger, and better for diagnosis being OBD 2 instead of OBD 1. Haven't found a downside from this upgrade other than the usual time/money.

And then if you want to go forced induction it's all off the table tho... Damn things are rather peppy at that point

Thanks man...that's what I was figuring...

I just started poking around with 4runners last couple of years...

I really miss the chevy 350 but the size of 4runners really is nice...

I am really thinking about getting a 4runner 96/97/98 etc with the the 3.4 in 4x4 and just keep my 95 for a spare vehicle.

Even if I have to have the engine rebuilt...
