the rusted frame rot recall was for tacomas i dont think 4runners ever got in on that recall

That's right.
There's nothing we can really do with this 4Runner, except maybe part out a few of the non rusted parts, say like seats and the clock and stuff like that...
Sometimes, it's just plain time to retire a truck for good. Well done, good and faithful T4R!

I called Toyota and they mentioned that the rear suspension service was done in 2002 or 2003 (I can't remember what they said). I didn't purchase the car until 2005, so that was done well ahead of time.
The guy on the phone said this probably could have been avoided if I had brought it in to a Toyota dealership for regular maintenance. In hindsight, I guess I should have. I just brought it to local guys for the oil changes and everything else, because it was about half the cost the dealership was charging.
The whole thing sucks, but in the end the responsibility fell on me to take better care of the undercarriage. I've never been a car guy, and only started coming here after shelling out a couple hundred for a brake job 2 years ago and thinking, "I should probably learn how to do this for myself."
Do I think Toyota put a garbage frame on this rig? Yeah, I do. There's fault with the company, but there's equal fault with myself, and if you want to point fingers, I'd probably point them at the Illinois Department of Transportation for salting the heck out of the streets in the winter as well. When I looked at the undercarriage 2 years ago, it was rusted, but not rotted. I hosed it down every chance I got. Last winter, there was only 1 snowfall and the salt was at a minimum, so I wasn't as vigilant. Again, my fault for not keeping up with everything.
So, now I'm trying to get what I can out of it. We'll see where that gets me.

OK. My mechanic offered me $1250 for it, and I think that's probably about the best I can do. Unless someone can top that offer, I'm passing it off to him on Friday.
I like my mechanic a lot, but I wouldn't mind seeing it go to someone on the list in hopes it could be resurrected. If you're interested in beating that price, please send me a PM.

Yeah, I think he's getting a great deal, too. I hate to have to sell it at that price, but I understand the reality of the situation that guys who might be interested in it might not be local and the time involved. If I didn't have to unload it to help finance a different set of wheels, I'd think about doing a part out with someone. But, it is what it is.
Again, if anyone is interested at about $1500, I'd be OK with that.
