No VSC button on dash

TN-Runner

New member
New member here looking to purshase a used 4th gen runner. Looking at the Sport Edition 4x4. I like the Limited but I dont have to have the leather or the other gadgets and something about that hood scoop does it for me. My question is, is the VSC system a good thing to have? I found a 07 one owner with 58k and a clean carfax that im interested in but it does not have the button for it on the dash, only center diff and RSCA off button. Would not having this be a deal breaker for some of yall?

Hixson, eh?

All 4th gen 4runners have VSC...it is just that later models...starting in 08/09 had a button to turn it off.

Generally, VSC is a good thing, but for offroading and even driving in snow, it can be annoying and in some cases I've read about...somewhat dangerous. You can search this site for more info.

There is a thread in this forum about modifying the 4runners to turn off VSC using a switch and a 'box' made by someone overseas...not sure if he still makes them.

By the way, the VSC is disabled when you lock the center differential....which I guess implies that VSC is not good for offroading.

You get different opinions here, but as for me...VSC saved by butt and 4runner a few years back one winter in Tahoe (CA) when I hit a large patch of ice...

jwyshrek, thanks for the reply and explaining this to me. I am new to Toyotas and never had a vehicle that has VSC. As you know we dont get much snow here in TN but I could see myself doing some mild offroading later on down the road. For now this will be my wife's vehicle to haul our twins around. Should I look around and find one that has the ability to turn off the VSC or not let it be a factor in the purchase?

I wouldn't let it be a deciding factor. Find a nice clean truck and if need be add a Vsc disable after. Couple $$ in parts.

No, don't let that be a factor...VSC, for the average Joe probably does more good than harm.

Also, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) and variations there of are pretty much standard on all vehicles now...along with TPMS...all thanks to our big brother the US government. Now, I'm just ranting...

but yeah, find a nice clean truck...one you like and go from there...

good luck.

Hixson. I live in Hixson myself. Graduated from Hixson high many moons ago.

You a well primed or one of the young high school kids my wife tells me to stop being cranky at and try to remember what it was like at 18?

I have never found a need to have the vsc off button. When I throw it into trad 4x4, it does that automatically.

It might be a neat feature, but it isn't something I have ever needed.
