Noise while stuck in reverse

Hi

Had a small question regarding a noise I hear in reverse. A little background, the rig's a 99 limited 4wd w/multimode 115K (no locker). Twice in the past 2 weeks I've been parked nose first downhill into a creek. When trying to back out in reverse the tires simply spin in rear wheel drive (stuck in mud). Putting the car into 4hi I get a strange screeching/squealing noise and the vehicle doesn't/won't go anywhere (I haven't pushed it too hard, only light throttle). I've found myself having to drop down to 4lo to get out, in which it does without a hitch.

Not sure if I have a serious issue here, or it has something to do with the gear ratio of reverse.

Any thoughts are appreciated,

When you have it in 4Hi, are the front tires spinning? Or at least one of them spinning or is it just making the awful noise?

There could be something wrong in your transfer case and it's not engaging in 4Hi. I would drain the transfer case fluid and see what you find. See if it is low or old/dark looking, also inspect for any metal pieces.

The only other thing I can think of is the VSC or whatever the traction control gizmo is on the later model 3g's could be acting up. You could try turning it off (if you can?) and see if that changes anything.

I appreciate the response. They're definitely spinning 4hi as it works flawlessly in drive. As I said it makes the squealing noise and does not move.

It's almost as though in reverse something is slipping or bound. So strange as 4lo digs out instantly. I'll definitely take a look at the transfer case fluid.

If you have any other thoughts I'm all ears.

Thanks again for the thoughts,
