Noisy diff?

I'm stripping down the front driveline on my 2.7 manual and I'm listening to the front diff.

I have taken off the vacuum actuator and have locked the front diff with the sliding collar.

If I grab either driveshaft and turn it by hand, the diff flange moves and there is no real noise.

If I turn the flange by hand, it will always favour one driveshaft over the other, I guess one is just stiffer.

However, if I lock the flange and turn one driveshaft, the other rotates and there is a noticeable growl. Is this normal??

It's an A04A diff; 2 pinion, 4.555.

actually im here to ask you as im having 98 2.7 4x4 manual 4Runner.

My question is when shifting from H2 to H4 do you do while moving or have to completely stop?

in my case i have to completely stop otherwise even if still moving very slow when trying to shift the feels grinding hard and the shifter shakes in my hand.

i tried to put trans in natural then shift / play with gas pedal etc... but still getting the same grinding. (till this moment i completely stop before put in H4)

note: from H4 to H2 can be done at any speed.

If you have any idea please share it with me.

Mine is a JDM Hilux Surf with a straight H-N-L shifter and push-button 4WD.

Unless you have free-wheeling hubs which are not engaged, there should be no noise when switching from 2 to 4-wheel drive.
