Noshirt's Stellar Blue Metallic '02 Sport Build

Decided to fab something up a little different. Can't warrant spending copious amounts of money on CBI bumpers with swingout so I decided to make something for damn near free.

Wanted to get the old rusty spare out from under the car, undercoat where I couldn't reach because of the spare and generally clean up under there. That's for another day though.

I like the idea quite a bit. As much as id love to get a plate bumper something like this would be a bit more feasible.

Finally got around to doing some welding. Haven't done a lot of welding before this. Not the most beautiful welds, but it'll work just fine.

Got the base all welded together, need to mock up the vertical shaft to see where I want to drill my holes.

Got the vertical piece welded also, need to add my gusset piece under there for added strength.

Slow and steady with this spare tire carrier haha

Still trying to hunt down one sport wheel. I got my spare out from under the car and its so rusted I wouldn't trust putting it on my car if need be

Need to weld three studs on the mounting plate, then weld the mounting plate to the tubing and it will be ready to paint.

Need to tackle the spring maintenance. Plugs, wires, coolant flush, diff fluid change, trans pan leak and new fluid.

Trying to keep up with some maintenance and replace wear items where I can. Sway bar end links definitely needed replacing. Need to order some prothane center sway bushings and do those.

Old

New

Center bushings that need replacing.

I didn't see it in your thread, but what did you use to black out the silver interior trim pieces? I also have a sport and think that the silver just looks tacky and dirty after 14 years.

Interested to see this tire carrier. I use my trailer hitch too much to use the same idea, but I am definitely interested to see how it comes out, where you'll mount/ wire the lights for your license plate.

what did you use to detail the black one? I like to try and detail my black mazda 6. I have a griots garage polisher and use meguiars M205 with black polishing pads. Maybe I dont have the technique down but cant seem to get the light/heavy scratches out. maybe not enough pressure? I'm scared to ruin it. haha.

SEM satin black trim paint. Works great. I want to find someone local that does hydrographics and get gloss carbon fiber done on all the black trim.

Haven't gotten that far honestly. I want to find a good place for it though.

Sounds like you need a white compounding pad and white compound for the heavy scratches. Then use your black pad and polish.

I hate black cars (I'm a detailer at a body shop) so I can't stand black cars, but my brothers 4Runner turned out beautiful. I'll never own a black car.

Finally got some time to finish the spare time carrier. Turned out perfect and I'm very happy with the results. Don't mind the rusty wheel, need to sandblast that really quick and throw some paint on it.

Going to start piecing the lift together. Toytec front coils and ome rear\5100's. Going with a mild 2.5" lift in front and 3" out back.

Need to find some wheeling places around Louisville, KY and actually get this thing dirty for a change.

Well got the two wheel itch again and picked up a Honda grim. Fun little ****er.

Got the hitch carrier off craigslist so I can haul it on trips.

Contemplating what lift I want to get.

Requirements:
-around 800$
-3" lift maximum
-heavier duty rear to handle two german shepherds, small motorcycle, and gear
-future accommodations for front and rear plate bumpers.
-not too harsh of a ride when dogs, gear, motorcycle is unloaded

Was thinking about the toytec coilover kit with bilstein 5100 shocks for the front and ome 891's with 5100's and airbags for the heavier times.

Well, the saggy-ness and bouncy-ness finally got to me with the extra weight after hauling the motorcycle and a load of mulch this weekend also.

Just purchased some Toytec 600lb front coilovers.

Still deciding on rear setup, but I think I'm set on Toytec super flex rear coils and extended 5100's.

Been researching which gauge that I want. Either the scangauge or ultraguage and decided to go with the ultragauge for aesthetic reasons and I like the windshield mount and the fact that it matches my already blue led interior lights.

Need to read the 55 page PDF file and customize the gauges I want displayed.

Should have some nice new toytec coilovers at my doorstep tomorrow.

Received my 600lb toytec coilovers. Man am I impressed with the quality of these.

Trying to part ways with my project GTI in the original post, but finding a buyer is tough. Need to free up some funds so I can get some wheels and tires.

On a daily driver, with occasional trips off road and camping (mild), how much of a necessity is it to get UCA? Probably going to go with some SCS F5 wheels and BFG ko2's. Still deciding on a tire size too, but don't want to have to regear at this present time.

The shiny bits

Probably going to go with SPC UCA and a diff drop for the front.

Planning on making a trip to gatlinburg, ky. Do a little camping trip for the weekend with the fiancé and dogs.

Visited the parents this weekend and got overly bored during the day, so i figured i would check off a much needed maintenance job...a full system coolant flush.

Ever since i bought the car, i got it home and did another once over and peeked down in the coolant overflow tank and noticed a nasty brownish green coolant. Its been on the bottom of my to do list, but certainly was needed after you see the pictures.

Started off with 6 gallons of distilled water, which was the perfect amount. And bought 3 bottles of Zerex asian blend coolant. Didnt want to get raped by the dealership for OEM coolant.

Started by lettting the car cool down and opening up the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator. Man was this coolant gross. This was the very first drain.

Then proceeded to remove my overflow tank and give it a thorough cleaning before reinstalling. The pictures were taken after it was cleaned, but it was gross inside and out.

Then put the drain plug back in the rad and poured two gallons of distilled water in the rad and repeated the drain in refill process two more times after that.

This was after my second draining and already looking a lot better.

This was the final old coolant line. Such a massive difference in color and by the end it was 98% clear.

Filled it up with the new zerex asian blend and topped the coolant overflow bottle up and its done! Very very easy process, just time consuming with downtime to let car cool down and let each draining process run its course, but overall a very easy task.

Next small task is tackle the front and rear diff fluid.

Still having the worst of times deciding on what rear coils to get

It's between OME 891's or Superflex rear coils.

Anyone have any insight?

Decided to replace the pcv valve on a whim. Nothing wrong with the old one to my knowledge, but for 10$ for the grommet and pcv valve, why not.

Old valve and grommet, luckily, I was able to get the old rotted grommet out without any pieces falling into the valve cover.

Old vs. New

All done, easy 2 minute job

Bought ngk plugs and wires that will be installed this weekend.

Ordered the timing belt kit today. According to the sticker on the timing cover, it was done at 104,000 miles before my ownership. For a mere 260$ for the kit, figured it was time. I can get this big ticket maintenance item done, and finally do the suspension, wheels and tires without having to worry about maintenance items needing to be done.

Have a guy that does mechanical work for us from time to time at the body shop that used to work for Toyota, that will do the install for 250$. Doesn't get much better than that and I know it'll be done right.

Got around to installing the plugs and wires.

Old plugs actually looked pretty good and I'm sure they were replaced somewhat recently before my ownership.

Really happy with these NGK plus and wires.

Also, my timing belt kit showed up. Only thing I might buy OEM is the timing belt itself. Anyone have any input on that?

Traveling to Florida this week and decided to have the timing belt job while I'm away.

Sold the grom I bought a few months ago, which freed up finances for wheels and tires.
