First off, thanks Ducmonsta for documenting his brake upgrade.

Well lucky me, my calipers are frozen stuck, what ever you want to call it.

Its been 25,000 miles on my last set of OEM pads, been almost 2000 miles since i did my stainless steel brake lines.

Lately noticed that the truck pulls to the left when i hit the brakes. few days ago i noticed the truck ticking at the wheel area, like the brakes are trying to release. then two days ago i get out and walked around the truck and smelled the signature brake cooking smell.

Well called up my local autozone and found out they have a special promo right now. 2 premium rotors and OE grade brake pads for $99.99

My buddy is a manager at the Autozone, i told him exactly what i was doing, WG in exchange for the WH. He advised me to return something, LOL

Ordered the rotor/pad combo and ordered rebuilt WH calipers. The calipers come with new hardware, springs rods and clips

One thing i noticed different from this thread. I asked for Limited brake rotors, they are the same size as my SR5 according to autozone. returned them and got the sport versions as the are the larger ones!

So total was $260 for two rebuilt calipers, brake pads and new rotors

I dont think ducmonster really showed how dramatic the difference the two rotor size is. He only showed the difference with the rotor on top of each other, if you know what i mean.

here is the difference in rotor size when they standing up side by side. its almost 1" bigger total

Now i have brakes. I dont think my truck has stopped any better in the last 30,000 miles. Now at 191,500 miles i have great stopping power, and no more frozen calipers!

Dont think this upgrade went that smooth for me. I did suffer a snapped off brake line. The hard line that goes into the caliper snapped right off. Good ole rusty toyotas!

called 3 dealerships to get the part right away, no luck. So i ordered it from my trusty local dealer $4!!

Upgrade to the WH calipers and rotors is well worth it along with the stainless steel lines i did 2000 miles ago.

1st time my 4runner left me stranded :) well it didnt break on its on, only when i went to remove it :P

I've lucked out so far on mine not freezing up.. Gonna keep tabs on this thread just in case though lol..:biggrin1:

i guess i went the easy way since i wanted a big brake upgrade LOL

just wanted to share for others who view this thread and aren't experiencing a frozen caliper there may be some preventative measures one can take to avoid having to replace everything.

Did you keep the same brake dust shield and just bend it out of the way?

Last time I changed rotors, I ordered the ones for the Limited but they sent me the larger ones. I found after some reading here that Limited early on was a hit or miss on the large or small rotors. I still have them waiting for the next seized caliper to do this upgrade. Thanks for the pics.

is the only way to tell if the piston is frozen is to take the pads out and see if the piston moves? Reason I ask is my brakes might have the same issue, they symptom is when braking is very jerk at low speeds while keeping the same pressure on the brake pedal. The only thing that makes me think it might be something else is that I don't see a lot of brake dust on the wheels nor are they getting hot, also it doesn't pull to one side while braking either
