Odometer only half working...

So I bought my 1996 4runner 6 months ago with 155,600 miles. Today I noticed the odometer is reading 155,302. I thought maybe I misread it the first time. All my paperwork confirms the mileage when I bought it. I have confirmed that the 3 numbers to the right are working. It will be a while before I can confirm if the left three numbers are working. Has anyone had this problem? The smaller trip odometer is working. Does this ECU record mileage separate from the odometer?

Not on a 98 or older, they completely rely on the little dial in the dash. Which by the way, is EXTREMELY easy to tamper with. Good thing the mileage is what it should have been when you bought it though.

I suppose you could replace the unit with a junkyard one, just spin the dial to where it should have been and plug it in. That's the first time I've heard of one going bad.

My experience with a analog style odometer is when you adjust them, say from getting a new one and getting it to the correct mileage, they tend to break the small plastic gears inside the unit.

If I get a replacement odometer, I will have to estimate my mileage for past 6 months. I just hate for the future owner to try and give me a super low offer cuz they think I'm lying about the mileage. Im thinking of just keeping tracking every time the odometer reads "155,000" and just add another 1000 miles to my log.

When you do fix it, just purposefully increase the mileage and go to a dealer or somewhere that reports the mileage to carfax. Then it'll look normal and in line with the report.

Nobody increases their mileage when tampering with the odometer lol. I'm pretty sure you're the first person who's ever asked how to roll theirs forward.

Well I finally hit the next thousand miles. I am happy to say that my 1000 odometer gear is not broken. I guess I wrote the original mileage down wrong.

Not entirely true. When I bought my 98 the trip meter wouldnt work. Tore into it and all the plastic gears were toast. So headed to the junk yard and found an instrument cluster with 240k miles (Mine had 190k). It was a tedious, long-winded effort to roll that thing back to my mileage. Took hours, and had to jimmy up tiny little shims in all sorts of tiny crannies for everything to turn smoothly. Has to be done mile by mile, cant just grab hold of the far left 2 and turn it to 1. Anyway, can be done but its a *****. Glad yours is working correctly OP.
