OEM Rear bumper...ouch!

I feel like I just got bumped in the rear, on a call with my local toyota dealer! For a complete rear bumper assembly, all pieces from frame back, totals about $700! I just bought an '87 with no rear bumper, not thinking it would be this expensive.

Anyone have ideas on where to find a less expensive OEM bumper? ...besides waiting for a used seller to come around, since I know that's an option now.

Why OEM? You'd really get a kick in the tail if you shell out for one and come out of the supermarket to find someone pulled a bump and run on that easily dented chrome. Look into aftermarket plate or tube steel that can take a hit and cost less.
 
You can check your local junkyards you might find one. If you wanted it chrome, you can even have a shop do that but it wont be cheap. As stated the oem are very weak, sheet metal in the form of a bumper. It will get damaged easily and will probably cost the same or more for a well built bumper that will actually protect your truck in the case of a accident or wheeling
 
I agree with above. I have been rear ended enough times without a sturdy rear bumper to protect from damage.

Coincidentally, my 99 4Runner has a plate rear bumper that was paid for when someone decided to back into my stock rear bumper with a Ford cargo van. A few body shops quoted $1,700 for repair. I used the money for a CBI offroad rear bumper.

The plate rear bumper has since taken a hit from a mercedes c250 and left nothing but scratches. The mercedes cost $7,000 to repair (hood, fender, grille, headlight, bumper, paint, and labor). The bumper has paid for itself twice already.

I just got rear ended on the 4th of February, except I was in a mercedes this time. Got slammed by a 99 Toyota solara. My car might be totaled, and in addition to that, they don't make plate bumpers for C-classes. All because someone took their eyes off the road a little too long

ive got the OEM bumper off my 85. im thinking shipping would make it not worthwhile tho.

also, I agree with the guys above, you're better off going aftermarket.
 
Rock Auto and eBay have OEM style aftermarket bumpers. You will probably also want the mounting brackets. They are usually about $100 and the plastic bumper ends are also available. I haven't bought an aftermarket 1st gen but I'm on year three with an aftermarket chrome 3rd gen and it's held up fine. I undercoated the backside of it because rust killed the OEM bumper. Look for a free shipping deal.
 
Thanks guys. I'm new to this topic and was a bit sticker shocked. I'm not a fan of the tube bumper look, nor am I building an offroad rig. I was thinking plate bumper, or oem style. I guess I'll have to go back to the drawing board since either of these options are $700+.
I'll check out rock auto, thanks for that lead Nervo! I guess I'll have to look into tube bumpers as well since they seem more reasonably priced.

Nevada, any idea on the weight of all the bumper pieces? I can guess box size on my own, then get a quote for shipping. May be worth it. How much would you sell all pieces for? and what is condition?

its been hanging on my shop wall for about 10 years. id have to pull it down and check it. off memory, they aren't very heavy, id say maybe 25-30lbs?

it might be a few days before I can get to it, its sort of buried at the front of my shop. quads and dirt bikes in the way...


wow, I cant believe how much interest ive got for that bumper...
several people contacted me wanting to buy it. i will come up with a price, and you can have first dibs.

I don't like many of the tube ones either but some of the more minimalist ones are alright, like this one that came on my '85. If you get a hitch with it that's worth $150 right there.
 
oem? for a 30 year old bumper ? oot

I wouldnt even go in to the stealership to ask that part for a laugh even if I really just wanted the cofffee and to check out the soccermilfs getting their lube&rotate on.. I cant believe it was available let alone a mere 700. for a part that doesnt even look right on a 4unner (with out a dent) too!

tube it , or I hate to say it again but Rockauto is your friend. I got both capa and non body parts from them before ; no problems to report. The jerks might have quit putting 'customer car" tool fridge magnets in their care packages , which figures now that I was going to send them a few pix

woah on that minimalist bumper. I agree before anything else that all tastes are justifiable ( ok , well most and I dont even believe that) but

that little 3/4" gas pipe across the back of the runner , m(aches) it look like its sitting in a dish washing machine rack or sumpin.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. O Hell yeah there is . Dats aweugly.

The only saving grace is the fierce looking truck suffering under teeny bumper envy is so tall the bumper is out of reach of all but the most persistent tailgator.

have you considered a swatch of standard guard rail bumper ? I would want one but thing it will draw cars looking to crash like moths to a flame.

saw another post re shipping - ship a bumper by Greyhound ( da bus) is probably best deal

The biggest problem with it is that women are always dropping their small children in traffic and running after the 4Runner with a single glimpse of the rear bumper. Do you have any idea how difficult that makes running errands? In other news... I disagree.

I just got my truck last weekend and it came without a bumper. Like the OP I am looking for something pretty stock/clean looking but I also want a hitch, not for towing, just for a hitch bike rack.

Any more suggestions out there for something minimalistic with an integrated hitch?
