I believe the rockers are the part between the door and the ground. Not the door protectors like you have. I've never seen those on a 5th Gen before.
You might be right, more of a body side molding. I do have the dealer added door edge guards "clear film" and also in the inner part of the door handles.
My dealer put these on also and they look like crap when the truck is not freshly washed as the edge line collects dust and becomes very visible. I also wonder how they will age. Any thoughts on removing them or if they can be removed without damaging clear coat? I envision them becoming yellowish and peeling in a few years in the sun and getting so firmly baked on so removing them takes off the paint.

What's up with switching the black every year? 2014 was just plain old "Black," 2015 was "Attitude Black Metallic," and now 2016 is "Midnight Black Metallic." Weird. Also, seems to be the most significant difference between the model years so far, lol.
I just compared the new sheet with the 2015 release. Other than the colors, the only differences I noted:
a) They now correctly state that the base SR5 radio comes with 8 speakers (has for at least the past two years)
b) Base entune now has "connected navigation app."
c) Base SR5 no longer lists third row seat as option (still listed for the SR5 premium)

Yeah I know lol , I liked the original standard black 202 best , The 2016 is the same weird blue metallic as 15 they just changed the name.

Not a big deal but just pointing out that 2014 was also called "Attitude Black Metallic" (same as 2015)... at least here in Canada.
I only know this because that's my 4Runner, a 2014 Attitude Black Metallic.
But yeah, weird... why "Attitude"? "Midnight" does sound better.

also lists oil capacity as 6 qts—it's really 6.6 qts.

In the US black was just black in 2014. Got a '14 SR5 in black. It's actually a different color (non-metallic).
Actually, just looked up the brochure: Attitude Black Metallic was available on the Limited in 2014, but the Trail and SR5 were only available in Black. Then in '15 they dropped Black and Attitude was available across the lineup...I recall it sounding kind of familiar when it happened, so I guess that's why.

They were "taped" on, so if you haven't had them for a long time, you should be able to remove them like you de-bagde your car, ie. taking out the SR5 or Limited badge.
Did 4Runners have them as an option? Or did they just tape Highlander's ones on yours?
They were dealer option, no idea where they source them. Funny thing is I looked at the vehicle before dealer prep, it had just arrived and there was no tint or protectors. We didn't even talk about them when working the deal. When I picked up the vehicle the next day (after price was was closed) they told me they were applied as it is standard dealer prep. They also tucked in my paperwork a 'dealer' MSRP add on sticker with these two items that I found later.
As to removing them, is there reason to? Are any of my concerns above valid?

The 2016 sheet also shows a difference in towing capacity, giving a max tow weight of 5000, 4900, and 4700 pounds for the SR5, Trail, and Limited, respectively. My 2015 Trail is rated to tow a max weight of 4700 according to my owners manual...
