sport hood price
I'm still a newbie so I can't make my own thread yet, so I wasn't sure where to add this and there hasn't been a recent post for sports hood questions, so I decided hey why not ask the people that own one and probably went through the same thing. So I want to add a sports hood to my 99 limited and found a dude that is selling a 4runner with a sports hood I asked him if he was willing to trade hoods plus some money on top he said he was open to it. Its a 99 plus the cherry on top is that its the same color!! Imperial jade its a bit faded but I wanted to ask if 300 bucks is a good deal that's how much he wants for it. Is $300 a good deal or should I try talking him down its an OEM hood so that's a plus for sure. I'm going to get it just wanted an opinion before. Thanks.

You could try to talk him down a little since it’s a trade plus cash on your end, but I would jump on it if it were me. They are very hard to get for those of us whose 4Runner’s didn’t come with one, especially an OEM one with the hood scoop insert. Pretty much anyone who is planning to buy one should factor in having to get it painted to their price since they are usually faded or just the wrong color.
and to add it's probably going to cost around $700 to get it painted and feathered into your current paint on the truck.

$300 is a steal for a good sport hood with insert. I wouldn't worry about paint right away, see how it looks once it's swapped and the truck washed. It might just need to be cleaned up, clay barred andnl re-cleared.
If you have emissions inspection in your area be aware of the stickers on the underside of the hood, those are supposed to match the equipment on the truck (catalytic converter(s)) - ask me how I know. Here are pics of 2 of the different stickers.

I have a white '97 SR5 that has a dented hood and I've thought about doing the sport hood haven't been able to find a painted OEM hood yet. Any idea where I could find an unpainted hood and who I would take it to make it white? Also approximate cost? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don’t know about cost, but the reason you haven’t been able to find an OEM one is because they didn’t do sport hoods in natural white.

Right I know that, should have specified I was going to go with non-sport one. Only one i've found in the last month or two was in california and the shipping would have been more than the hood.

The latest addition:
OE hood with the insert, but it needed work. Fortunately, a buddy of mine is in the body business so he and I got to work.
Have kept my eyes peeled(pun intended) for years and have always been 1 step late for the rare occasion that 1 ended up at a PYP around here. Had held out for an OE hood even though those eBay sport hoods had me very close to purchasing them multiple times.
OEM hood...
Drilled out the striker strut rivets and then just drilled new holes in the new hood to re-install them with new rivets.
For anyone curious, the sport hood is considerably heavier IMO than the OEM non-sport hood... At least it definitely seems that way. Struts have no issues with it, but even pulling the hood release does not "snap" or "pop" like it did on the other hood, and I am assuming that is due to the weight.

Thanks for the info dude, for sure I'm going to get it they sure are hard to come by, I'm going to go see it on Saturday. I know a body guy that can paint it for $400 bucks so the total for the sports hood (300) would come out to be around $700 painted, is that still a good price for an OEM hood and insert? How much do they usually run in parts? if anyone knows?

Glad I came on here to ask if 300 bucks was a reasonable price, I'm definitely getting that sport hood! For sure it needs a coat of clear that's for sure lol, my dad knows a body guy that would paint it for $400 but if I could save those 400 that would be even better, I'll ask if a super fine sanding and a coat of clear would do it, if not 400 bucks is not bad to paint it. I'm in SoCal so for sure I need the freaking Nazi strict California Emissions one. I'm hoping and positive it has the CA one since its located in California but I'll double check when I go pick it up on Saturday. Thanks for the tips dude!..... I cant make out what the sticker says from the pics he has up but at least it has the original stickers on! Oh and it has the heat shield, which I heard is expensive on its own, so I guess I am getting a killer deal :rockon:

Just because it is in California does not mean it has California emissions. California emissions systems were only required to sell the vehicle from new in California. You can own California or Federal emissions used vehicles in California. You will need to make sure that the emissions sticker either matches your current one or you will need a new emissions sticker that matches your current one.

I'm going through this now, the stickers are discontinued, however they are still out there if you know what to search for...
Here is what my research has to offer you for guidance and encouragement
The stickers are specific to year, engine, emissions package, sensor(s) and region (48 State, 49 State, California, Canada, OWL
For example, 1999 had 2 options for the 4runner with 3.4L engine in North America I was able to find (that mattered to me):
Emissions Label 3.4L Federal
11298-62650
Emissions Label - 3.4L California
11298-62660
Different cars/equipment packages will have different stickers. The big number on the sticker is basically the part number sans the part family code (11298)
I found the ones I needed via a Google search

Lol, dude you are awesome! I've got a sport hood for my limited but I'm thinking I may hold off. The limited flares don't really work with the sport hood...imo
