Official Coolant Flush Guide

Hey there, I just did my first coolant flush and I found that the information available was actually quite vague for these trucks!
So I decided to do my own writeup. This is my first writeup for anything so if anyone has any other tips that are helpful, feel free to add them!

A coolant flush is a drain/dilution of the coolant in the system and a replacement of that coolant. A traditional radiator flush only drains what's in the radiator and not whats in the engine (I think).

I wanted to do a full coolant flush because my bozo PO used green coolant instead of the Toyota Red which these trucks need.

The first step is to drain. I found that the rad and engine drain much better if the engine is hot. Now BE CAREFUL, the coolant coming out of the rad is 90 degrees Celsius. The good thing is that the drain is engineered in such a way that you can easily not get burned.

1. Get down on your side/back under the truck and from the "facing the truck" perspective, there is a little white plastic "petcock" or drain plug on the left or passenger side facing the rear. The plug unthreads counterclockwise. There is a small hole in the bottom of the plastic plug that allows coolant to drain without pulling the plug entirely out. I think this is because if you pull the plug entirely, it wants to shootout horizontally and make a mess. It's really up to you but I thought it drained faster if you pull the plug completely. The plug has a little o-ring on it when you remove it so don't lose that!! Once the plug is removed, open the radiator cap to let the air run through it. It takes quite a long time to drain so leave it draining for 10-15 minutes, even when it gets to a slow dribble.

2. As the radiator and coolant system is draining, remove the coolant overflow reservoir(right/drivers side of the rad in the engine bay). The black cap and hose pops out, remove it and rest it on the battery or something. The actual reservoir slides onto a little plastic track and sits in a plastic plug hole on the bottom. Removal will require unbolting the battery mount which covers to top of the battery. Grab the reservoir firmly with both hands, and pull directly straight up to remove it. It may take a little elbow grease but it comes out quite easy. Empty this coolant into a bucket or however you plan on disposing it. I took some wipes and cleaned off the outside, and I put the reservoir under my tap and ran water into it to clean out the buildup of some gunk in the bottom. Once clean and mostly dry, put back into the plastic hole and plastic track in the engine back, reattach the battery mount, and insert the hose and cap for the reservoir.

3. Once 10-15 minutes has passed and you feel confident that the coolant is drained. Insert the petcock til it stops turning and take distilled water and fill the rad through the radiator cap hole. I was able to get about 6.5-7L in. Once the rad is full, squeeze the main hose, that goes from the top of the radiator and into the engine, several times to get some bubbles out. Top up with the distilled water, reattach the radiator cap.

4. The radiator and engine is now full of mostly distilled water with some diluted old coolant. Ensure the petcock and rad cap are securely attached and closed. Turn your temperature in your truck to full heat. (Don't forget the rear heat control too). Now don't turn on your blowers, merely set the dials to full heat. This cycles the coolant through your heaters and therefore through the whole system. Turn the truck on and idle it for 15 minutes. I made sure my truck was up to temperature and let it run at that temperature for 5 minutes. This makes sure the water circulates the whole system and it gets hot enough. Turn off the truck when you are done.

5. This is your first full flush. Make sure to be very careful, the coolant/water is 90 degrees celsius at this point. Get back on the ground and slowly open the petcock with your hand positioned above to avoid the hot liquid. The steam coming out of it will probably get you and I actually managed to drop the petcock into my drain bucket because it was so hot! Again, let it drain out for 10-15 minutes. Don't be alarmed if it looks like your engine bay is smoking [emoji14] , it's the steam. Since the system is now pressurized, it's gonna PISS out of the drain hole really fast so watch out!

6. In order to truly flush the system, a couple drains are required so repeat steps 3 and 4. I went a little over kill and I did 3 full distilled water fills and drains. Even at the end, the fluid coming out was tinted green (imagine watered down gatorade).

7. Once you are satisfied with the colour of the liquid and the amount of time it's been taking [emoji14] , reinsert the petcock and make sure it is tight (stops spinning, don't overdo it). Many people/Toyota recommend a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and coolant. On the back of the coolant jugs from Toyota, they state the specs for different mixtures levels. I likened this to mean that a true 50/50 doesn't really matter as long as you have more coolant than distilled water (in colder climates). The coolant jugs from Toyota come in 3.7L jugs. The system takes 8L without a rear heater and it takes 9L with a rear heater. Now the rear heater lines won't drain because of gravity and this is why I did so many distilled water flushes and drains. The PO didn't use the right coolant so I wanted to make sure it was at least mostly distilled water in there. I added a full 3.7L jug into the rad, then I added a full jug of distilled water (4L), and I topped the rest off with coolant from the second jug I purchased until the rad was full.

8. The radiator and engine are now full of a somewhat accurate 45/55 coolant to distilled water mixture. Take the coolant from the second jug and fill the reservoir to about 1/3 of the way to the full line from the low line. Hard to explain but there should be room for 1.5-2" of empty space for liquid below the full line. Use distilled water to bring the level up to full. This is roughly a 50/50 mixture. Ensuring the heater lines in both the front and the back are turned to full heat, turn on the truck with the radiator cap OFF or REMOVED. This will allow bubbles to escape from the system. Leave the truck running for 10-15 minutes. During this time, squeeze the top rad hose gently every few seconds to "burp" the truck and push bubbles out. As the coolant is running through the system, bubbles will occasionally pop up. As the bubbles come up, the coolant levels drop obviously, so I used the coolant to top it up. It dropped more than I thought so I used some estimation skills between distilled water and coolant to figure out a 50/50. Once the coolant is getting warmer and bubbles aren't popping up anymore, you can reattach the radiator cap and turn off the truck.

Ta-da! You're done! Again, I am pretty amateur at this stuff so this is all I've learned from doing it myself. I found information online was spotty at best so this was everything I could think of to try to help more guys like me! If anyone has any tips or tricks they'd like to add, feel free!

Pretty cool write-up, thanks. Only suggestion I can think of is between steps 4 and 5 before shutting down engine spray some cool hose water thru radiator for just a minute to cool things down a bit to minimize the hot water spewing out.

Burping is much easier and more effective if your park with your front wheels up on a curb or park with the truck pointing uphill. If you are going to the effort of 3-4 flush and fills, pull the thermostat.

Also, if you are going for a true 50/50 mix you'll need to either pull the thermostat or drain the engine from the drain valve on the block, otherwise there's still water in there. Not a huge deal though, I tend to mix it 60/40 so that remaining water makes it a true 50/50.

If you're worried about it you can always get a hydrometer to check too.

I think doing it while it is running is similar to the instructions on the back of the factory gallon container of Toyota Red coolant.

I seen a pic of how much coolant came out from the block. And it didn't seem worth draining. It wasn't even a half of galon.


I think if you just drain your radiator and fill up and drain again afte running for a little. You'll be good.
 
I called my dealership today to ask how much a flush cost. They said 240, but also said they don't bother flushing, saying a drain & fill gets 99% of the fluid. Maybe they're just too lazy to flush? They mentioned that they used to do it often, but found it wasn't necessary.

I plan on a drain & fill soon with Toyota Red or Zerex. ( I have green in there now. Honestly it may have had red when I bought it, but when it dipped low I put green in ). Tisk tisk from what some of you have written, but I didn't know the color mixing was bad.

Anywho, why doesn't anyone just pre-mix the Toyota red then add it in? I don't really want to do guesswork with water then coolant

Burping is indeed important because I believe the highest points are the heater hoses on the firewall. I put mine on ramps and also use a spill free funnel. This makes the radiator the highest point.
 
Here's a video [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] and I made flushing his cooling system. I personally only do drain and refills of the radiator, because like what was mentioned somewhere above, draining the radiator gets most of the system capacity out. However, if you want to switch coolant types, like going from Prestone Green to Toyota Red or Pink, you should absolutely flush the system. Or, if your coolant is really nasty looking, a flush would be recommended in that instance as well. I know some drain the engine block, but after I learned how much is in there, I'd never bother with it.

Pulling the thermostat out would speed up the multiple flushing process but then you have to spend time pulling and reinstalling the thermostat. So, how much time is saved doing this if questionable. I know it's easy, just 3 nuts, but I just opted to let the engine rise to operating temperature every time so the thermostat would open up.

I think we both saw the same pic. It looked to me that it was no more than a pint.
 
The reason to do it several times is to circulate clean water through the engine, lines, and heater core. (areas that retain some of the old fluid).

i hate working on a hot car and didn't want it to wait for it to fully warm up to open the t-stat for each cycle. so what i did was remove the t-stat and go through the cycles that way.

usually a coolant flush is accompanied by a t-stat replacement anyways.

a small 4in piece of garden hose will fit in the fill neck with a funnel attached to make burping easier.
 
Is there a reason to repeat the flushing like in the video vs opening the petcock and constantly pouring water in?

They both accomplish the same thing. I never would have thought to leave the petcock valve open with the engine running but I can understand how it works just fine because the coolant does drain very slowly out of the valve.

What you have to make sure is the coolant is flowing through all the areas. This means your coolant temp needs to be hot enough for the thermostat to open or you pull the thermostat. The main heater and rear heater (if you have one) need to be on the hottest setting, full blast to flush out the heater core and heater lines.

I do not agree you need to drain the coolant out of the block to ensure a 50/50 mix though. The way we did it in the video is we measured what we drained out on last flush cycle. By looking at what the system capacity is in the back of the owner's manual, we knew by subtracting the amount we drained out we would know how much distilled water was left inside the system. To make a 50/50 mix of what's left in the system, we started out by pouring in an equal amount of antifreeze concentrate. Then, we topped off the system with a 50/50 mix, burped the system and we were all good.

There's obviously more than one way to accomplish this job. As long as you did a good job of flushing the old coolant out, refilling with a 50/50 mix, and properly burping the system, you're golden.

I was under the impression that you want to have the heather on full heat, but not actually on as it'll suck heat away from the engine, unless that's just at first. To save time, how about heating it to temp, then opening the petcock and running Distilled water through everything. I feel that would speed things up. I'm also only planning to do a flush to get old green coolant out of there.

I was planning to do it your way as well with DW then pure coolant. I don't plan to mix the pink and red however. I'm going all read since it's an older coolant for the 3rd gens specifically without some chemical. I was going to buy two jugs. Pour 1.5 qts of coolant in there, then 1 whole jug (4 qts) then 1 jug's worth of DW (4 qts) then I should be set. Then I'll have 2.5 qts of concentrate for whatever I need in the future. One thing though, you mention the thermostate opens at 188 (in the video) my temp on my Scangauge never goes over 184. It likes 182 for long freeway driving and has crept up to 184, maybe 186 on mountain roads. I plan to remove the thermostat and replace anyways, so can I just pull the thermo out and run water in there, or would that drain faster than I can fill it?

I want to do it well, but also don't want to spend 3 hours doing this!
 
My radiator was coming up on 8 years old so I decided to go ahead and replace it, change the thermostat, and fill with new coolant. This thread was a great guide. When burping, I just let the truck run for about 15 minutes with the radiator cap off and periodically squeezing the upper radiator hose.

Engine temps were inline post replacement and fill.
