This is what I'm thinking too: the front seats are pushed ALL the way back. The back door may be smaller but I think the fender flare, part of the door, is throwing off the visual dimensioning.

As with most new vehicles, it always takes a second to get past the shock and awe. I bet it will look good in person. But I will say... that Limited is looking really clean. Finally no more low hanging cladding. A rear locker and smaller wheels with body painted fenders would be nice.

Yea, the Limited is just a better set of wheels away from being a really nice spec if you want to be a little more subdued. I'd like the full time 4WD, but the Limited body always kept me away. This is doable.

Kinda excited to see where the TRD OR and SR5 go.

The new design is growing on me but man it's been a long time coming. Do we know where this generation will be built?

If those are correct - I'm not in love with the design. Looks like a truck they had to configure into an SUV on a budget to me. The design language doesn't work for me. I hope it's just a render and they did a better job in real life. The hood is too long. The windshield is too sloped and roughly 40% of the vehicle length is wasted by that ungainly front design. So the passenger compartment looks like it got smaller despite the longer wheelbase. Rear door windows are about 25% smaller than the 5th gen because they pushed the seat position so far back and rear doors are so small. Overall, to me, it sure looks like a big step back. Classic CALTY output - compromise for the sake of compromise. If this is real - I guess the LC250 has more chance of success than I thought it would. Feels like they intentionally nerfed the design to make room for the LC. Bummer.

According to that it shares the same 112" wheelbase and length overall as the LC250. This looks almost unusable: (So it must have a 3rd row?)

I’m with you I don’t think it’s aesthetically an upgrade at all from 5th or 3rd gens IMO. If you like 4th gen probably love this. I’m liking the landcruiser more. Curious to see the price difference between Land Cruiser and this. Wish the landcruiser had roll down rear window.

I noticed that too; the 2nd row leg room looks atrocious in the one picture Toyota provided. I'm really curious to see what those numbers are ultimately listed at versus the GX550 and LC250 in tandem with the cargo space ultimately. The hybrid system I'm sure is going to screw up the packaging of the trunk for the TRD Pro and Trailhunter and likely prevent a proper fold flat solution also.

Yeah. It looks like Tacoma rear leg room. If so - it's a hard pass for me. Unfortunately that may mean I'll never buy another new 4Runner. Next generation would be around 2040. The decision to move the cabin about 6 inches back on the chassis is both confusing to me and highly compromising the design. It's handicapped all the GAF models with no apparent utility. It didn't translate to better angles or more engine access. it's just sticking about 12" of dead space in front of the engine and cutting 6 inches or so out of the passenger space.

Toyota seems to be a hit every odd number generation and miss on every even number. Maybe this is just keeping with tradition?

Absolutely isn't a render.

That 5th gen is a 31" tire versus the Pro 6th gen on 33" tire. They've shoved a lot more tire under it and that is throwing the proportions off. The fender flares are a lot bigger and this will have proportions more like a higher trim Bronco.

As far as the rear seat space, look at where the center console is. Those seats are pushed all the way back. Compare that to where the console ends relative to the seatbacks in the Tacoma.

The tires are part of the oddness of it. But they also moved the cabin well back on the chassis. I think that's why even with the longer wheel base the rear door is a lot smaller and probably a 4-6 inch shorter interior cabin length. Just like the Tundra where the cabin is smaller and the bed is significantly smaller, but the truck got longer. The rear doors look smaller than a tacoma's.

Mostly it just looks like a tacoma with a rear cabin slapped on. And that's what it is, but the proportions don't work very well. It reminds me of a first generation Nissan Armada - the body lines don't fit well.

Maybe it'll look better on 35s or 37s? It'll be nice to see one in person in 2027 when they hit dealer lots.

It's giving off some 4th gen vibes for sure. I didn't really care for the 5th gen facelift in 2014, but it's grown on me. Maybe this will too in time.

A quick very crude adjustment to what I think could have looked a lot better proportion wise. The difference here is simply aligning the body styling front to back as a unit. And shortening the hood while adding back the length to the rear door area.

I'm not sure if I like it. It really reminds me of another vehicle, but I can't quite place it yet.

I do like the interior changes as I think that was something toyota really needed to update. I also like the engine changes and the towing capacity.

I have a 2018 TRD ORP right now with 175K miles. Not looking to change for a few years but then the hard part will be do I get another 4R , a GX or a Land Cruiser?

Wow Toyota really knocked it out of the park with the 6th gen. I see a lot of similarities of the 6th gen with the 4th generation. The limited looks a bit ugly but as did the 5th gen Limited. Overall a pretty big win for Toyota. A lot of 4Runner fans are going to be really excited for this.

Honestly my biggest gripe about it is Toyota's recent trend of locking features behind expensive packages. To get the exact config you want may cost a lot more than expected.

The "dead space" is probably for better crumple zone characteristics.

As for whether I like this new 6th gen, I'm not sure. Maybe seeing it in person will make a difference. Right now, I'm glad to have my 5th gen.

I don't think it's crash related. There was plenty in the 5gth gen. I think it's just styling choice. It should at least have a frunk so we can store stuff up there.

Plus side: even an 8274 will fit in a hidden winch mount! So you could have 150 feet of winch rope.

Ugh the departure angle

That part I think is really hard to solve. It has to have about 40 inches from the rear axle to the rear bumper cross member to fit a 33 or 35" spare underneath. So the choice is to either have the departure angle as it is or move the tire up to the door. And then it's a PITA to have to move the spare tire every time you want to open it, or they can mount it on a side swing door like the J150. A bit of a catch 22.

I wanted to like it but I really dislike it overall. It looks like its made in Mexico...

From the side the Tacoma roof line from front to B pillar is ugly. Its too much of a merging of two current vehicles into one. The multilayered step outs to get to the fenders flares doesn't make sense. Its body lines coming up from the wheels are too harsh and the xterra like window line jumps would drive me nuts. Its overdecorated, overexaggerated and hard to wrap your head around compared to the 5th gen. There were so many decent community renders and concepts and this is worse than most. out:

no thanks. the 5th gen is going to be the last 4 runner I own. sorry toyota but your vehicles are starting to look RICE'd out... the styling is really a love it or hate it. it screams for attention . maybe it's just the picture but that ingress/egress in the second row looks horrible. and it isn't even that great in the current 5th gen either

on the plus side it looks like the limited trim comes with a snowplow on the front. toyota moving in the wrong direction with worse angles as well. the exterior just looks so plasticy. ok enough negativity from me

this is a sad day for 4runner fans. most will disagree but give it 1-2 years and see how you're liking that 4cyl

It seriously got 4-5" longer. Bleh. Sad. I was hoping for a length reduction. Making the approach/departure angles worse and added more empty space under the hood is exactly what I feared they would do. Those are let-down items to me.

As a bandaid for those items worsening offroadability, yay, bigger factory tires now. yay.

Windshield is a lot more slanted now, but that was kind of a requirement in the increasing MPG age. Everyone likes the 5th gen brick shape until it's time to road trip at reasonable mpg.

It's great that the hardware finally improved, and I get that they had to work with a lot of hard points on TNGA-F, but, still.

Same. If it's just rebodied Land Cruiser 250, same length and wheelbase, then I like the Land Cruiser more. A lot more. The LC has much more cohesive looks. These 4Runner images look like the team designing the back half didn't talk to the team designing the front half, who just copied the Tacoma from the A-pillar forward.

I'm shocked that, knowing how important the offroading thing is to 4Runner buyers, Toyota would go and make the approach and departure angles worse. That should've been prohibited during the design process. Maybe it would've just cost too much for the 4Runner to have a unique wheelbase and length of frame.

Not hard to make the 5th gen look tight in the rear legroom either.

That said, I expect it to be a smidge smaller inside. The 5th gen is from 2009 and was panned for roof crush strength all the way back then. This new one will probably do a lot better on all versions of crash testing and that will probably take its toll on interior space even though it is roughly the same size vehicle. Most vehicles don’t have 15 years between redesigns where the change is so pronounced.
