OFFICIAL STAR WARS POST! Possible spoilers, beware

I finally got to see TLJ today. In some ways I think this was the most disappointing SW movie since the original trilogy. This movie actually had a lot of potential, and there were definitely some parts I liked. But overall, it just rubbed me the wrong way. Here are some of my beefs with the movie:

1. Way too political! I don't go to a Star Wars movie to be subjected to a ham-fisted leftist diatribe. In particular the whole "casino planet" subplot, which was not only political but felt completely forced and unnecessary, and just dragged the plot down.

2. The movie also had a strong vibe of PETA propaganda. Again, not what I want in a Star Wars movie

3. Ever since the original trilogy, they seem to have forgotten that Star Wars movies are supposed to be fun, "feel good" fairytale space operas. Yeah, this one had a lot of humor and that helped some, but mostly it was dark and depressing.

4. Much of the attempted humor just plain missed the mark, IMHO.

5. They tried to cram too many things into the movie. There were so many subplots and side stories and characters and twists etc. The whole thing kind of bogged down and at times was hard to follow.

Especially since this is the newest Star Wars in the timeline thus far, and the First Order doesn't appear to have any money problems.

On the same note, with the First Order's technology and infinite credits, they still couldn't detect the smaller escape ships headed to the nearest planet after their last large ship ran out of fuel.

New to the forum, but I think last two canon films have had great story plots, blended with finally... decent acting. The newer films actually create a sense of despair and hopelessness, which would make senses considering how grim the universe is because of the Empire/First Order.

Rogue One was the best SW movie of them all IMO. Solid story, funny moments that weren’t forced or just unnecessary silliness, no cutesy creatures, and realistic sacrifice for a greater cause.

So far Rogue One is my favorite of the non-original trilogy.

I wasn't a fan of the prequel trilogy, only things I liked were Darth Maul and Mace Windu. Hated Jar Jar, hated how easily Mace Windu was defeated, and hated how Anakin Skywalker was such a whiney emo.

I rented Force Awakens on iTunes or Amazon, what a waste of time and money. All the hype about Mark Hamill starring in it only to appear in the last few minutes. All the hype about Captain Phasma being a badass and a strong female character/role model, only to appear nearly as briefly as Luke Skywalker (perhaps Disney self hyped her to sell more toys). Ooh ahh Kylo Ren is Anakin Skywalker's grandson, and just like grandpa he's a whiney emo.

So when Rogue One was released on Netflix I watched it with apprehension, expecting to be disappointed like Farce err Force Awakens. I ended up really enjoying it and have watched it several times ever since. Chirrut Imwe was such a badass, and Darth Vader's rage at the end was awesome...especially how not only did he slam the rebel fighter to the ceiling, he also chopped the dude in half. And I find Felicity Jones more attractive than Daisy Ridley.

Most of the luke-rey-kylo-snoke stuff was interesting. I liked how they just killed off snoke because he was such a boring character I didn't want to have to deal with him any more. I loved the 'let the past go' speech by Kylo, kind of felt like he was talking to the fans. I wish they just dumped basically everything else in the movie, the stupid farcical space chase, the casino, mary poppins leia, the destroyer, all of it. So boring.

Ok so Kyle Newman is not the director of TLJ so no "the director" didn't post that. A guy named Kyle Newman posted it and @RianJohnson no different than we do here on T4R. Besides it's just a joke.

I do think that whole scene could have also been deleted. Completely unnecessary.

He was having a lot of critics during those days, and he didn't post anything positive about the movie, one tweet to 'defend' himself (17/12) and after that the milky alien one, if that's not trolling the fans...

Other thing, it looks like adding an Asian actress didn't work like Disney expected:

Parts of TLJ were frankly terrible - the milk thing, Leia’s Supergirl flight, the casino segment, Snoke’s samurais and the Bruce Lee fight choreography, and no explanations for so many plot points to name a few.

TFA was enjoyable but my wife and I decided during TLJ’s closing credits that we’ll see IX on Blu-Ray.

We'll not come back to the cinema for a Star Wars movie.

Disney needed the planet casino plot...

I think I said "are you F#*king kidding me" out loud in the theater when I saw Leia basically "fly" in the frozen vacuum of space, especially since you know, she passed in real life, what an easy way to close the loop on that character. that was monumentally foolish in my eye.

I'm a hardcore Star Wars fan, there were parts that I loved, and parts that I hated... Given that it's Disney, there were obvious forced creatures, characters, and useless plot points just for the sake of selling toys. I hated the Casino scene and was totally turned off for the best part of a half hour, I didn't really notice the anti-capitalism themes at the time, but later upon reflection I just had to shake my head at the stupidity. The Leia Mary Poppins scene also was really freaking stupid. They had numerous opportunities to kill off Leia and send Carrie off, but Rian made no attempt to do so. I also hated the hyping up of Snoke being some great pivotal character only to get sawed in half when he couldn't mind read that Kylo was going to do so. Also, the Empire literally following the cruisers and waiting for them to run out of gas was absolutely infuriating and F'ing stupid as a plotline. Oh, and the Porgs, Pig Nuns, and Milking creatures were all useless stupid Disney additions that were pointless, brought nothing to the story, and clearly were there for toys and other stupid purposes.

For the good, the visuals and space scenes were amazing as always. The soundtrack as always was flawless. Grumpy Luke was a bit off-pitting, but Hamill is such a good actor that didn't bother me all that much. The Rey storylines were decent, being tempted by the darkside, etc. were pretty well done. I still wish they would explain more backstories, but I imagine that will all fall to JJ since Rian was out for more of a flashy movie with less story development. The Luke coming back to save everyone was epic, his face down of the First Order and battle with Kylo were brilliant. His moment with Leia was also fantastic and brought tears to my eyes. Overall, I didn't hate it as much as many, but I did hate certain parts for sure, but I loved it overall. I guess with Disney I just took the whole film for what it was with a grain of salt, and with all the disappointments I had with the prequels, I guess it was easy for me to be able to enjoy it as a popcorn flick even though my dedication and expectations were high. Either way, I loved it and can't wait for IX!

I use to go to the cinema to disconnect. But movies're a way to deliver subliminal messages these days, a way to set peoples minds in certain directions, and the men who want to tell us what to do or how to think/act are a bunch of hypocrites perverts in the movie industry. We look at North Korea and we see how their citizens've ben brainwashed, and their propaganda's similar than the Hollywood movies, the difference's we pay for it, that's capitalism! The Last Jedi's an example, and one of the reson I'll not come back to the cinema for a Disney Star Wars movie.

Audience score in Rotten Tomatoes is 49% liked it at the moment. Bad movie, very bad movie, Disney have a lot of money and possibilities to do a master piece and they did this. By the way, The Panthom manace score is 59% like it, and that's considered the worst SW movie before that thing called TLJ (we can blame Russia and say russian hackers modified those numbers to damage Mickey industry).

Go Mary Sue, go, you can do whatever you want!

I don't have problems with 'holes' in the story, but I think the next director doesn't have enough time to develop them in one movie.

We agree to disagree, it's ok, it's a polarized movie, 50% liked it and 50% didn't like it based in rotten tomatoes. Glad you enjoyed it. Peace.

I hated Episode VIII so much because I gave VII a pass, thinking some of the massive plot holes would be better explained in this one! Rain Johnson took the most laziest way out and actually gave me a better appreciation for the previous one. The visuals were the only thing that I can honestly say I liked about it! Everything else related to the story was just bad, like really bad! Rey, is beyond being a Mary Sue at this point, a new category should be established calling super power, all knowing females a "Rey" especially considering she beat Luke in a duel. Finn and Rose were a waste of time, Snoke was a waste of time and pointless hype, Poe was the stereotypical gunfighter and Leia, oh man! Rian Johnson should've just waited until he was given his trilogy, which might be in jeopardy now, if he wanted to start ****ing up the parameters of the universe.

This video is long but the first few minutes get the point across: left to his own devices, George Lucas would likely have made a version of the original film we all would have forgotten a week after we saw it, if we had seen it at all.

Yes, he imagined it all and deserves credit for that, but the revisions he’s made to the original trilogy are mostly silly and unnecessary, and Episodes I-III are watchable only for hardcore fans. They fooled me into watching Episode I but I’ve only seen bits and pieces of II & III that verified my choice not to waste my time or money.

TFA was enjoyable but my wife and I decided during TLJ’s closing credits that we’ll see IX on Blu-Ray.

I wasn't going to mention it unless someone else did b/c it can light off so many polarizing discussions, but it truly disgusts me how clever these Hollywood clowns apparently think they are when in reality, their brainwashing tactics are so ridiculously obvious.

I enjoyed TFA although it was essentially a remake of A New Hope. Even the initial evacuation sequence and the final battle in TLJ reek of Hoth and TESB. That's why I really loved Rogue One - it was what SW should be IMO.

It astounds me how plagiarism is the most repulsive thing a writer can do yet the J.J. Abrams of the world shamelessly take plot points and scenes from previous movies (the ice planet & creature in Star Trek as just one example, swiped from A New Hope) and they're considered "geniuses." Write and direct an original movie based on these characters. Then you'll be a genius.
