They don't jam.

Actually, they can, and if they do you are generally screwed. There are several ways this can occur, including:

3. primers back out of the primer pocket

I've experienced 1 and 3. 3 was my fault -- I was using my own reloads and the brass was worn out, so the primer pockets were loose. The solution was to ditch that batch of brass.

I was wondering about that but somehow my post didn't get posted in the other thread... what's wrong with carrying without one in the chamber? Granted I see if you have to draw and fire immediately it's no good.

If you're not going to carry with one in the chamber, then you might as well not carry. You might need the extra 3 seconds it takes for you to rack your slide.

It's unsettling at first, but you'll get used to it. Just remember to obey the four rules and you'll be OK. Remember, there is no such things as firearms accidents...only negligence.

If you ever need your gun to defend yourself, you need it RIGHT NOW and you need it REAL BAD.

Yes, with a fair bit of training you can learn to cycle the slide relatively quickly on the draw, provided you have two hands available. But the problem is that your support hand may be otherwise occupied -- pushing your spouse or child to cover, opening a door, fending off the perp, etc. There are techniques to cycle a slide with one hand, but that is significantly more training, and those techniques have issues. In the amount of time it takes to get good at drawing and cycling the slide, you could just learn how to safely handle and carry a gun with a chambered round.

Furthermore, if you are only comfortable carrying a gun without a chambered round and you do actually have to use it, then in the aftermath you have a gun with a chambered round that you have to holster -- something that you are not experienced in doing.

Get proper training and carry with a round in the chamber. If you are still scared of it, carry an empty gun around the house for a week with the hammer or strike cocked. At the end of the week, tell us if somehow the hammer or strike fell unintentionally during that week.

If you put some traction tape (like the stuff they put on steps and skateboards) on the slide, especially the top, you should be able to rack it on your pant leg.

That might help. the slide on this thing weighs a little over a pound and is somewhat stiff.

I've been able to rack others without much trouble on my leg, but I can't get it to go all the way with this one. just a funny observation about my free handgun.

Free is good. The big question is, do you trust it with your life?

How many rounds have you put thru it?
They will loosen up with use.

If I had to, yes. But it's not that type of gun for me. that's for the m&p if I ever get it.

Guess I shouldn't say stiff... more like...firm. It's had thousands of rounds through it I'm sure. Hasn't been cleaned for at least three years. Heading to (undecided) to find a new pair of sunglasses, a slip on hogue and some cleaning supplies. and a cheapie holster just because.

never seen it jam though. fun little experiment to see how dirty it can get.

A good cleaning/oiling should help a lot.

Yeah I damn near ripped my jeans trying to rack the slide with my leg.

I know people say hi point sucks... but free, and as far as I'm concerned, 100% reliable so far definitely proves otherwise.

Now looks, on the other hand, are another matter. Hi-Points are about as attractive as a walrus...

What do you think of the Bersa?

So far it's been a great gun and I haven't had any trouble out of it. But I also haven't got to put as many rounds as I'd like through it.

I really wanted a Walther PPK (to replace a P22 that was stolen) but couldn't justify the price difference for close to the same gun. I also really wanted something nickel because I've never had a 'pretty' gun. After I played with both at a couple of gun stores and read a little about them on the net, I settled on the Bersa.

I actually had to buy nickel with blue upper and purchase the nickel slide separately. For some reason the solid nickel was on nationwide backorder despite Bersa having plenty of nickel slides in stock.

It's also a DAO as you were talking about.

My favorite carry setup is a Les Baer Stinger, 4" barrel

I also have a Kimber Ultra light which is easy to conceal in summer.

When traveling and spending most of the time in a vehicle I like the full size.

Since it pretty near impossible to aqcuire ammo at the moment, I decided to initiate a thorough cleaning on my toys. These are the ones I've stashed throughout the little apartment we're currently in, but definitely not the entire collection.

Among those that I've either formerly owned or not pictured include:

- M16A2 service rifle
- Glock Model 22 (.40 S&W)
- Armolite AR
- Remington 700 Target Tactical
- Para Ordinance Warthog (.45 ACP)

- Some 12GA pump/semi street sweeper shotty that I got in Turkey w/ a pistol grip and folding stock. Don't remember the brand.

but your right ammo is few and far between right now an if you can find it good lord its expensive. I bought 150 rounds of .40 s&w for 90 bucks Saturday only 50 were hollow point. crazy pricey I'll def. be at the gun show in feb. to stock up on some rounds
