I know. The holidays and now the house stuff are distracting. It's the longest I've gone without shooting since I bought my first gun. I've found two indoor ranges that I may try but I was really hoping I'd stumble upon a decent outdoor range. I think the closest is an hour away though.

Looking for an AR .308 hunter that requires little mods out of the box to work.
Thought about building one, but there seem to be several good ones out there already that would just need a stock and long range scope.

Look up Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex. That's where I go and they are only a few minutes away from me. They're right off the freeway on the north end of Fountain. It's a huge outdoor range and the staff there is awesome!
edit: I forget that you're in Castle Rock. I don't know of anything near you. The range here is pretty good though and may be worth the drive a couple times a month. It's easy for me though, a 10 minute drive each weekend is pretty easy to handle.

Price is a bit high, since I'm contemplating a Wilson build, as well.
The only thing is the short barrel. I'd have to swap that out for at least 20"

Any particular hardware or specs? Brand preferences (or to avoid)?
PSA has a CMMG for $1500.
That's about an hour South, but might be doable. I'd rather drive South than North from CR anyway.

What will you be hunting?
My first go-to rifle would be a Remington 700 .308 - been around forever, and is an excellent bolt action hunting rifle.
But for me - I'm old school, and prefer a wood stock. Here's the one on my wish list. A Remington 700 .30-06 with wood stock.

crikey. how far out are you planning to hunt? my 18" FAL is easily good to 300 yards.
if I need to got further than that, i'll grab the .300WM.

Mule deer, elk, and maybe pronghorn (that's why I want distance, those boogers can see far along the high plains).
I'd prefer an AR because ever since having wrist surgery I haven't recovered 100% and can't operate a bolt well... or at all without a lot of pain and that's why my Remmy isn't my go-to anymore.

I absolutely love my Henry. A true American Classic. The iron sights are not my cup of tea but throw a little 2-9x or similar optic up top and you have yourself a fantastic plinker. I love popping off a few rounds in rapid succession because it makes me feel like a cowboy. Lol. If you are looking for a plinker, I would highly recommend a Henry lever action in .17hmr. What a beautiful round. It is a necked down .22 long casing. Ballistically speaking, it blows away .22lr. 17 isn't too much more expensive than 22 and prices will continue to fall as the round gains in popularity. Then again, every self respecting gunnie needs a 22.
It is my carry gun, too. Nothing feels better in hand than a 75. Pick up a CZ and it feels like it was molded to your hands. Then pick up a Glock and it is like handling a brick; I like Glocks, too. I wanted to get the decocker version of the 75 B, aptly named 75BD, but I am recklessly impulsive so I bought the 75, 2 weeks later I got the P01. The only thing I don't like about the P01 is the tiny slide due to it having an integral rail. Great service pistol though, without a doubt.

I'm glad you're happy. I had a Henry 45-70 brush gun that looked like it was put together by chimps with hammers
I'm beginning to think I have to drop 2-3 large for a proper lever action brush gun.

I got a Henry, and am completely happy with it. For one, made in the U.S.A. And I think it's the only current lever action made in the U.S.A.
Octogan barrel and brass receiver
Mine is a .357 magnum, I mainly got it to caliber match my Colt Python.
My only complaint is the way you feed cartridges into the tube, other then that it's great to shoot, that long barrel really makes the .357 zing when it leaves.

I did the same thing but couldn't get any locally available ammo to run through it. Sent mine back for a refund. I applaud the way Henry handled the situation.
