Most likely because your 4th gen has ATRAC & extra power, while 2nd gen has neither.

3rd gen 4runners from 2001-2002 came with ATRAC...so, that would be a great comparison with the 4th gen. I have heard that ATRAC on 4th gen is a bit better than ATRAC of 3rd gen 4runners.

If you compare a 3rd gen 4runner withOUT locker (and withOUT ATRAC) to a 4th gen, then 4th gen has the advantge due to ATRAC.

Wow, I am surprised no one ahs said anything, agree, disagree, think I am nuts, laughed, cried......it was meant in a good natured way gang.

I just read it and thought it was great! I put bigger tires and sliders on my 4th gen and that's as far as I'm going for a good long while (except for better skid plates). I'd like some more detail, if possible, on what types of things you learned from the Aussie. I love the driving - not so much the modding.

He knows they are extremely capable and it didnt' even phase him at all to park where he did. It was pathetic watching it because the snow wasn't even up the the rim! it was on grass where nobody has parked before so there wasn't built up ice or anythign. the stock tires on those things are absolutely terrible so i guess that's the culprit.

There is a very simple reason why he was having so much trouble. Have you ever tried to drive on wet grass? It's like being on a sheet of ice. I've seen a vehicle slide after it was parked on wet grass. Also if he had the Dunflops! The 4th gen 4Runner is one of the most sure footed vehicles on the market. I can floor it from a dead stop on wet pavement and it just blast without even triggering ANY nannies. Even on snow it is HARD to trigger the traction control. I haven't driven a vehicle that is more sure footed then the 4th gen 4Runner, not even a 3rd gen, sorry!

lol im guessing i got lucky 5spd and a factory locker :bowdown: now i just have to work on finding a small lift as im always hitting the skidplates .... im thinking of going with like a 1-1/2'' - 2'' lift i dont want to go to big yet just not sure how good it would look with 265x70s...... i like the 4th gens now only if the had a 5spd or a 6spd

It would have been cheaper just to add ARB rear locker.: But, i know, you wanted those cupholders!!

Scoop,headlamps,sunroof,Limited wheels,fog lamps also would have added to the price and doing a console change would have been a PITA.
Also the previous owner of my '99 had the windows tinted 5% all around and had a Yakima basket up top but yes,it was the cupholders. :

Greg,it does appear you have the taller coils but you should do a rear diff clearance measurement and let me know and I'll go measure my mom's '99 which is bone stock and has the shorter coils.
