So as I was drinking my morning coffee and reading the news around the world and apparently the "new buzz" around the auto world is the "Three different all-wheel-drive systems being offered, including one that includes both a low range transfer case and locking rear differential for maximum off-road performance". And it get's better boy's and girls"either a 184 hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder or 271 hp 3.2-liter 6-cylinder engine, both connected to a segment-first 9-speed automatic transmission".

Personally I'm glad someone is making a SUV that you can do something with other than pack kids and grocery around in and maybe the family Labrador. In time we will see if it comes close to our beloved 4Runner's :laugh:. I'm personally thinking not so much, but time will tell :shrug:. After looking for a base price I could not find one. I'm guessing around the mid 30's-40K or more:doh:. As of right now the only thing I see good about this thing is the gas mileage and the wheel style:tsk:

I'm pretty sure Jeep is putting a diesel in their line-up as well in the near future.. Toyota needs to get on the ball and get a more offroad worthy opponent. The 4Runner's have done nothing but get bigger and bigger over the years. Much like the Sequoia. Neither in which are good factors for offroad play. I wish they'd put a diesel in the Highlander and make a solid rear axle version with disc brakes

Well the first FJ was not a hit but they wheel pretty good. We will see but I'm with you on this one.

This isn't even close to 4Runner competition, it's aimed at CUV's and "soft roaders" like the Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Rav4, VW Tiguan etc.... It pains me to see this spill over onto the Toyota forum, I see it every time I check Jeep Forum.

The main gripe I have is everyone comparing it to the XJ which was replaced with the KJ/KK which was named Liberty in N.American market but kept the Cherokee marque in other foreign markets. It's just an evolution of the current Liberty and shift toward using Cherokee as a global marque and boost brand recognition in N.America

I agree with you. I put this up for everyone to read knowing that it holds no candle. I honestly think it is funny how it is being marketed in general. I got a kick out of it and I thought you all might too. Toyota has been doing it right for a long time. It took me awhile to come to the light but I have found it and I'm not going back.

I will admit I have another SUV in the garage and it is total garbage(Acadia). Wife is already trying to get my 4runner "For the Winter Time" as she had beached hers up to the frame twice this year and put it off in the ditch in the drive way.:laugh:

Yup. If I were in the market for a newer wheeler, the 4th and 5th gens wouldn't be on my list. Just too danged big.

I guess it all comes down to what do YOU want in a vehicle. This thing is obviously aimed at the droves who want to get away from trucks altogether, but want the space inside, and enough gadgets to claim it's "tough". Who wants the repair costs of a busted planetary gearset after a trail run, raise your hands? How many times did your T-case fail you--not many, if ever, I would venture to say. Like one commentor under the ad said, who wants to pay Aamco to fix a 9-speed tranny? It would be like taking out a second car loan. Fact is, if you pound your rig offroad, SIMPLER IS BETTER, and a unibody design will NEVER be as strong as body-on-frame. I'm sure the mall crowd will LOVE this new Jeep, though--I can see thousands of adventurous secretaries driving them, boasting to their boyfriend that it can go anywhere his heavily-modified 4x4 can go (yet never getting it within 10 suburbs of exposed dirt or rock).

Jeep wants to get serious about off-road capable vehicles, they need to make their quality & reliability better and do what the should have done from the beginning! Made the Grand Cherokee a Body on Frame SUV instead of a "need to weld it after every run because I cracked it again" unibody.

Not only is it Unibody, but its independent REAR suspension. Lockers and low range make not a good off road SUV.

My neighbor has a 2012 Grand Cherokee and he is pissed. Been in the shop 9 times in the past year. All covered under warranty but what a time suck. It's a v6 Laredo 4x4. It's never been off road, basically a soccer wagon. Everyone I know that has a Jeep has problems. Interior falling apart, loose window joyce so it rattles. Nothing major, but lots of little issues.

My XJ has 200,000 miles and running strong still (well I mean it leaks oil...and coolant...and power steering fluid but that's the Jeep thing IMO) , it's the modern Jeeps that have problems.

That new Jeep looks more like it was meant to compete with a BMW X3 or other cross-over type vehicle.

Compete with a 4Runner? Well which year because they so different now that comparing them would be a joke. Each has its ups and downs so I'm not bashing a particular year but looking at a 91, 99, 04, or 2013 are all very different.

The 4Runner platform is anything but consistent in design and style. :surfer:
