oil burning smell????

tonight, when my wife came home after work, i could smell something similar to burnt oil from my 4R. i checked the engine oil level and it is good, clean (just had oil change less than 1000 miles ago). but i swear that smells like some type of oil is burning/burnt.

all fluid, oil are in good shape. then my wife stepped into the garage and she could smell it too. currently the truck is only clocking at 16k miles.

anyone experienced that before? any suggestion before i take it in stealer???

i want to make sure everything is good before x'mas cuz i'll bring her out to the wild again in x'mas day.

2 likely suspects considering the recent oil change: They spilled, didn't tighten the drainplug or filter properly; you know, the usual oil change suspects. Next, the T4R has grease fittings in the driveshaft. When those get greased some of the old grease can sling out onto the exhaust system. If this is the cause it tends to be most noticable near the RR tire.

thanks for the suggestions! but i had my oil changed about 3 weeks ago but past 3 weeks, i swear i haven't smell anything in the garage until last night.

if the drain plug/filter spilled, i think i should smell it from day one after the oil change..... but that just happened last night.
 
What about smoke? Cars are smokey during winter, but bluish or colored smoke from the exhaust plus the oil burning smell can mean something?

um.............. i hope not, i mean it is still practically new, only 1.5 yrs old with 16k miles......

but the smell is from the engine bay for sure.... :(
 
went to stealer, service ppl checked it out, i doubt they didn't take off the skid plate, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it, any other suggestion i should look into?

they said let's see if the smell goes away or getting worse. actually i do appreciate they did that for me since i went in after hour today.

they said maybe there's any type of plastic catch underneath and exhaust is burning it off???
 
I would buy a few cans of engine spray cleaner. spray the valve covers and pan and go to a car wash and wash with care the lower sides of your engine also the pan area.

Now see if this fix's this burning oil smell.
 
guys, i heard from one of my friend, he was saying that since our V8 4X4 system has a small "sensor" thing mounted below the differential, that will sense any uneven wheel spin. anyhow, he pointed that if the differential is in operating, would that create the oil burning smell since there's grease inside the diff.?


he also suggested me to wash off the mud underneath the truck first (i haven't really wash out all the mud since the mud play last week).

like he said, if there's any mud/dry mud stuck onto the diff., that might be the cause of the smell?

With the Hondas I've played w/ in the past...if you catch a grocery bag stuck to the CAT, you're going to have this nasty plastic smell for 2months.

Wash your truck thoroughly like what your friend suggested & keep us inform.

i washed underneath the truck twice with a nozzle spray head hose, one very late midnight and one this morning, i swear there's still mud underneath. i washed out at least 10 lbs of mud so far, i will keep washing it out until the water is pure clean.....

but the thought, i do realize the smell is going away. especially i spent most of the time spraying under the engine area and the diff. area.
 
This was done at 45k miles or so. Not one of my brighter moves. After numerous cleanings, skip plate removals, pressure washings etc there was still evidence at 155k when I sold it. It would smell like hot mud for 2 years after the episode (on & off, mostly when I towed). Hot mud does smell similar to hot oil sometimes...

thanks for the heads up CJ3Flyr, yea i'll try to clean it up and hope i don't need to spray any scent fragrance onto it... LOL

but yea, since that was my first time, i really didn't think of the after math......

Other than dirt in my eyes when I went underneath it the only trouble I had was a starter at about 100k. When I opened up the starter it was clear that mud was a factor. Being stuck and sitting (like in my pics) is way different than plowing through in terms of mud penetration.

It's all part of the game:D :bigok:

just an update, i washed, sprayed the underbody and even hose down from the engine so everything should be rinsed out. BUT smell still there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i re-checked all fluids, everything are fine. so what else i should be looking at??

i noticed smell are more coming out from driver side wheel/engine area. so if i popped the hood, smell coming out from left side only, passenger side is totally fine, no smell. thought?

no kidding!!!??? 16k miles has a leak around valve cover? in fact, my wife drives that most of the time, and she'll never drive pass 3000 rpm, how can that happen? it's a toyota we are talking about, not a ford... hahahahahaha

Yeah I know I know but laugh as much as you care, it's you smelling the burnt oil not me. HA!!HA!!HA!!

Now take your super tough TOYOTA to get it fixed. Then the wife can RED LINE it baby!!!!HA!! HA!! HA!!
