oil cap - gasket?

Hi guys,

I've recently noticed a slight oil leak from under the oil cap. Screwing it in harder didn't change anything. I'm wondering if oil cap should have any gaskets on it (according to dealership it should - but the one they got for me is so thick I can't catch the thread to screw the cap back in). I've compared the photos online and my oil cap looks to be original.

after searching some more - it appears that gasket part number 90430-37140 is indeed for a 5VFZE engine but for... Tacoma. I was trying to find the filler cap / gasket on toyotapartscheap without success. I'm wondering if Toyota at some point changed the style of oil cap. Help.

Mine didn't have one and leaked like your does. I just bought a billet one off ebay for 10 bucks. Looks better and doesn't leak anymore.

I have replaced mine. The gasket was $1 and change if I remember correctly. That is the correct # for my 99. Takes about 4 minutes to remove and install. No more leaks.

interestingly - there must have been some change in oil caps over the years - my 1996 cap doesn't have any gaskets under it, however the one stealership ordered for me has a gap that perfectly fits that large gasket.

they wanted $40 for it... guess I'll order an ebay replacement.

Sorry about reviving this old thread but I too had this issue with no gasket on my oil filler cap.
I was noticing a slight oil leak down onto the valve cover beneath the oil filler cap in our 2002 and realized that there was no gasket on the cap.
After trip to the local toyota dealership the parts guy said there should be one and I had to order one in. Part # 90430-37140.
Picked up the gasket and installed it tonight and it took a great deal of effort in order to get the threads on the cap to begin to thread in to the valve cover due to the thickness in the gasket.
Is this normal? Had to really crank it down to make myself feel that it wasn't going to come off.
Just wondering if anyone else has any insight on this.

I can't remember seven plus years ago but I do know with time the gasket seemed to fit better.

If it doesn't leak, don't worry about it.

Or fix the clogged pcv valve that is causing the increased pressure in the crankcase.

No. I don't have any experience with the oil caps, but I would be worried about your plastic cap being brittle, and your threads stripping right off.
It sounds like the caps changed, and the caps that use the gasket have a large, obvious channel for it.
It sounds like a gasket was put on a cap that wasn't designed to have one. Just speculation.

Replaced the gasket on my 2000 today. I had to dig the old one out with a pick tool.

I recently replaced the gasket on my '97 3.4. The new gasket exactly matched the old one, and the filler cap screwed on as normal. Maybe the cap on your 2002 is different?

At first I thought the gasket was plastic and part of the cap. I assume they just put the new one on top of the old one.

From what I’ve seen the tops of the caps differ in look of the print, but they all have gaskets. Often the gasket is so hard you don’t realize there is a gasket.

I’m lazy, I just order a new cap. They come with a gasket installed.

mine too was so hard I thought it was plastic part of cap. Not hard to replace and now my valve cover stays so much cleaner
