Oil Change using extractor?

Anyone ever change the oil in the 4Runner using an oil extractor?

I use one to change the oil in my M3 and it works better than draining (due to oil pan design).

I have one I used on my car. I have not tried it on the 4Runner. I imagine you won't be able to use the extractor from the floor, hoses are too short.

I plan to use a fumoto n-type drain valve. Use a hose to drain directly into my recycled oil containers.

So it's no longer the old 14mm bolt size? Does anyone know if the front axle nuts use the 54mm hex pattern like on LC's and older 4runners or the same tool used on 3rd gens?

Fram sells one that you can buy at auto stores. I've got it on my 4runner now and works great. Also cheaper and easier to find than the Fumoto.

I knocked a couple of minutes off that and my hand doesn't get coated with hot oil when taking the bolt out. With the Fram drain all you do is screw on the hose and that opens the valve with a pin and very cleanly drains through the hose exactly where you want it (no more wind spraying it everywhere) And also it does not have a lever that can be tripped or broken like the Fumoto (I know it probably would never happen but I don't like to tempt Murphy)

I've used the Mityvac on the 4Runner at least twice. The hose is plenty long for a stock 2003 4x2. I'm about 2,500 miles away from doing it again to check how much oil is left in the pan after sucking it out with the Mityvac.

It's the ONLY thing to use for a DIY oil change on a BMW.

I just tired my extractor (Tempo Oil Boy, 4.5 qt). I had to place it on a 5 gallon bucket to reach. I had to empty it once during the change. I removed the drain bolt once it finished. Very little oil remained in the pan.

I'm still going to get the fumoto. I have to get under the truck to remove the skid plate and oil filter. With the the fumoto I can drain the oil directly into my recycle containers.

With my extractor, the hoses are messy, I need to empty it during the change, and still need to get under the vehicle anyway.


If I had the V6, or the V8's filter was easier to get to, I'd use the extractor. I'd get the Mityvac, it holds 1.7 gal, and looks like the hoses are much longer.

Bluto - do you ever change the gasket since you never remove the plug? I am thinking of switching to that. Also do you think that the drain will fit with the skid plate cover on the V6? Thanks.

I don't think the drain plug washer has any more chance of leaking than any other gasket on the engine. If you put it on too tight, it may split. If you are concerned, take a Toyota washer to a parts store and find a copper washer the same size. It will never split.


My V8 has a lot of room between the skid plate and drian plug, maybe 6 inches. I've never seen a V6.
