I am new to the Toyota owners and I love my new urban runner so far. I love the v6! I was wondering how many miles people are running their Gen 4 v6 4runners. The dealer said to go 5000 miles in between oil changes. Is that true? I always go 3000 miles and what I am used to. Also does anyone suggest any oil? I love using Mobil one but is it necessary? What are you guys doing as far as oil changes?

3,000 miles has never been the required recommendation of any manufacture, except for maybe some turbo models. 5,000 is recommended by Toyota, but some people go less and others go further. Here is a link to a poll on what our members do, as far as oil changes.

If you look at the results, 53% of the members change oil every 5,000 miles, while 33% of the members change every 3,000 miles.
I use Mobil 1 in my 4Runner, I think I will use Mobil 1 in all of my new cars. I am one of the ones like like to change oil every 3,000 miles and with Mobil 1 I change it every 5,000 miles. I think, changing regualr oil every 3,000 miles and changing synthetic oil every 5,000 miles maybe a bit of over kill, which is what I like. Newer engines work hard and have a lot of power, compared to older engines.
I would pick a schedule that will be comfortable with you and stick with it as much as possible.

. I'm going in tomorrow for an oil change because I'm over due (5400 miles). I typically change around 4K miles though. Or whenever a major scheduled maintenance is due.
