Oil cooler

I thought in at least some 4runner or tacomas that they added in the oil cooler as part of the tow package. But I just checked my factory sticker and it didn't mention that.
(if that's the case, I'd presume that if you weren't doing any heavy towing or similarly really pushing the limits, that you'd be ok without it.....though personally I wouldn't remove it unless I had a really good reason....or it started leaking and I didn't have access to a reasonably priced replacement)
Why do you want to add a second oil filter?
A friend has raved a few times about a special huge filter a family member put onto their subaru that then only needs to be replaced every 15k. Personally, while I like to go the factory spec 7500 between changes on my 4runner, especially with synthetic blend without too much harshness that would push it towards the other shorter service interval recommendation....oil and a filter is cheap, and I can now do it on both the 4runner and sienna without lifting them. 15-20 minutes and $20 or so....it would be hard to justify modifying things to worry too much about that.
That said, while it's only been 4k since my last change, it's now around 16 months. Looks like I need to practice what I preach and do an oil change already. Tomorrow, before is snows.

Holy crap I know! Too bad there isn't a base, or else the pow would be dynamite! So much is closed right now-hopefully more will open up. I'm really getting antsy though because I probably wont be able to ski at all this year due to a surgery I had back in October. I'm going crazy! But I hope it turns out great for you.. down here in the bay area, it barely rained yesterday and now it's sunny :sigh:

Tow package
I'm not sure if it has the tow package or not. I know some SUV's have an added oil cooler as part of a tow package.
The oil cooler, and hoses, always seem to leak after a year or so. They are a pain to repair.
I've read that on trucks, with these same engines, the oil filter is where the oil cooler is.
On the 4runners the filter is in front of the motor mount. On trucks it's behind the mount.
I was thinking that if I replace the cooler with another filter, I could not worry about the cooler leaking.
Does anyone make a remote filter kit for this engine????

I haven't had any oil leaking on the 4runner, so haven't looked into how tough or easy it would be. Personally, I'd leave it for now, but if you do have to fix leaks more than once on it I'd consider bypassing it (but if so, being careful on the oil temp)
On a 3000gt I had a tough enough time trying to replace a hose to the oil cooler, mainly because the bolt or banjo bolt was stuck. It's tough to put a breaker bar on it, and with that leverage you don't want to bust something.
Yep, finally got some snow, though on the low end of expectations. Diamond Peak is 4 minutes away, and at our same base elevation, and they got 14". I was expecting more Thursday night so didn't get out to play in it early Thursday, but it was still fun. They opened up some new runs that haven't been groomed, but I was nicking some rocks and such when we've went down a few of them in the last few days.
Not perfect by any means, but it's getting better and is still fun if you can avoid the crowds. At DP even with the 3 kids (3, 4 & 7) on the easy lift and at peak time of 11:30am, we never had to wait more than 5 minutes. And after lunch on the rest of the mountain with the 2 older kids, we never had more than a 2 minute wait. A smaller mountain isn't for everyone, but it does have advantages.
