Oil filter change interval

I was wondering if I can change OEM oil filter every 8k miles. I will replace oil (Mobil 1 synthetic) every 4k miles but change filter every other oil change. Not sure if OEM filter media will hold up up to 8k miles.

Thinking of transitioning to Mobil 1 filter, which I think is good for 15-20k miles with synthetic oil.

Oem filters are cheap.....why not replace it every interval as the oil change?

Filter cost is non issue. Changing oil filter on a 3rd gen is PITA. No matter how careful I am when replacing the filter, I always manage to stain my garage concrete with few drops of oil.

I drive 2k/month, which means oil change every 2 1/2 months. It would be nice to stretch the oil change interval.

That being said, I use a filter from a 90's model Ford Taurus with the 3.0 v6. Same diameter as OEM but about 1.5 inches taller for longer intervals.

Toyota makes a taller filter that fits. I don;t know the part number but I got it once and put it on without paying attention until the next change

If anything, I would not change Mobil 1 at 4,000 miles. You can easily go to 6000+ but I change mine at 6,000 ish along with the Toyota filter. If you are concerned about the filter going longer, switch to a Bosch long life or a Mobil1 filter.

I went 15,000 km (9,300 miles) on my last one, I let that slip a bit. Mostly it was freeway driving up and down the west coast so not too demanding on the engine. I was using Castrol Edge Titanium full synthetic, 5w30 and FRAM Ultra Synthetic filter XG3614. They say the synthetic can go longer but I couldn't find any numbers on mile interval. Also supposedly the FRAM filters are crap so I'll use something better next time, although that is one of the better FRAM filters.

What I have started doing to minimize the oil spillage coming from the filter is before I pull the filter off I put an old t shirt bundled up on top of the motor mount area below the filter. When you pull it off it catches what oil comes out.
In my truck I am also running Mobil 1 full synthetic and a Toyota OEM oil filter, the taller one of the two ( I’ll get the part number and post it here) and I go about 6000 between changes. My truck has 320,000 miles on it so I’d say it’s working.

I've been going 10,000 with Mobil 1 and a Wix XP oil filter...only uses about 1/2 quart between changes. Both my 4runners have around 240k

I place plastic sheets as well as corrugate box underneath the truck when I change the oil filter. I am able to clean most of the oil, but some oil drips/pools on the aftermarket steel skid, which is impossible to clean unless I remove the skids completely or power wash them.

Anyways, I will start using mobile 1 filter with 8-10k change interval and send oil sample to Blackstone lab for analyis. Based on the test results, I will adjust change interval accordingly.

4000 miles on mobil 1 is throwing money away. You could easily go twice that with no issues. If anything, do an oil analysis test and see what that says at 4k.

Use a larger filter and one designed for extended service. I use the Wix XD 51516. With full synthetic you should be good to go for at least 6000 miles. Like others have said you can confirm with an oil analysis.

With that many miles condensation and sludge deposition in your crankcase would be at a minimum. If it were me, I'd opt for twice/year oil changes (12,000 mile interval) with a high quality full synthetic and a large, high quality filter.

Feeling guilty? Change the filter at 6,000 miles and top up the oil.

Keep an eye on the color of the oil on your dipstick. Mine looks like clover honey at 10,000 miles.

In my experience with the Fram filters (any series), they filter fine, but fail quickly. The anti-drainback valve fails and you get that crazy valve clatter at a cold start.
I switched to the MotorCraft filters (apparently a proprietary ADBV) and have been very happy.

Typically, with any brand, the oil filter is at its end before the actual oil is. Getting a bigger filter can help negate this.

Great point. Do an oil report - you'll probably find you can easily go 10k miles with a good oil and filter.

You can place a 'form-a-funnel' up right below the filter to catch the oil that comes off the filter. It makes for a pretty easy/clean change.

The FRAM Ultras are actually considered the best filter on the market right now, it's the cheaper FRAMs you shouldn't buy.

Um, he said he gets a couple drops on his garage floor, and he doesn't want that. I don't think "everyone" is doing anything wrong. No one said they get tablespoons of oil on the ground [emoji23] He wants to avoid the same "few drops maybe" that you experience.
OP, my opinion is that the OEM filters are best. There has been lots of oil filter testing, and the Toyota filters are great. You'll be just fine changing your filter AND oil every 6k miles if you want to do that, but I would stick to changing it with your oil, myself.
Throw something down to catch the oil drops- not a big deal, right?!
