Oil filter comparison Toyota or Amsoil

Engine and filter changed in 2014 I believe. Still the 4.0 but not the same as it was 15 years ago. No longer a spin on filter, it's now a canister which I actually prefer. Makes it nice and easy to inspect the filter media for anything that shouldn't be there.

OK so it changed in 2010 not 2014, wasn't sure on the date it changed. So it's an 8 year old engine. Either way, I agree it works and it works well. Having the filter canister is great IMO even though lots of people ***** that oil changes are difficult. Those people probably shouldn't be changing their own oil to begin with.

I buy these things with over 100k miles on them, run them another hundred or two then sell them at a decent price to someone planning to just keep driving. I bought my 2nd gen with 145k miles on the clock and ran it to 250k. It now belongs to my buddy and is getting up toward 350k miles. Only work ever done to the motor on that one was head gaskets under warranty 300k miles ago or so. I change the oil regularly - 3k on the old ones, 5k on the 5th gen. BTW, 5k miles is the "severe conditions" service interval for a 5th gen. I qualify for that because I take frequent short trips (train station is 2 miles from home for my daily commute), drive off-road a lot and run the piss out of it at high altitudes.

For those that don't know, our oil filter housing cap is plastic for whatever reason. The Camry, Prius, and a handful of other Toyota vehicles use the exact same housing however it comes with a metal cap. If you want to upgrade, which to me is worth it, here's the link. Did it on my 2016 Tacoma and 2016 4Runner.

Did you have to swap out the center tube? I've thought about doing this mod on my 2016, but am hesitant because the different length of the center tube the filter fits over.

Yes I did. They just pop right out and swap over, takes 10 seconds.

I prefer to change my oil every 1K with a quart of each: redline 0w-20, royal purple 0w-20, amsoil 0w-20, mobil 0w-20, quaker state 0w-20. That way i can have the best of each oil. With 1k intervals i dont run a filter at all. Its always clean.
