Interesting video . Now if someone would come up with a method so the 5VZ-FE filter change wouldn't result in oil going everywhere :becky:

Toyota might have been out to lunch when it came to placing the oil filter in the 5VZ 4Runner, as well as the V6 Camry 1MZ (right under the front exhaust), and many others. They are much better now.

Not as bad as my wife's Altima. I have to REMOVE THE TIRE to get to the filter, per the service manual. Now that's a pain. Changing the oil filter on my 4Runner is a breeze comparatively.

The Runner filter change isn't ' hard ' , I just hate the f'n mess it makes . No matter how careful I try to be , oil seems to just go everywhere , especially into the skid plate , where it lingers for a few days
Now I have to go search around here and find out where the air box intake originates in the fender . I have a damn chipmunk manufacturing a condo in my air box ( just chewed on a brand new Toyota air filter , GRRRRRR ) . You'd think there'd be a varmit screen in that tube ??

Rodents and varmits love the wiring in Toyotas for some reason. This happens frequently.

Just to add to this list. Wix makes a filter that they describe as being synthetic oil only and for extreme conditions such as heavy duty towing and hauling, excessive heat, and driving in dusty/muddy conditions. Just add XP to the end of the part numbers. As an example I use Wix 51348XP and Mobil 1 synthetic for my oil change in my sport.

^^ GREAT INFO kball, this week I ordered WIX 51516XP from RockAuto ($6.92 + shipping US$)
I understand Amsoil Synthetic Oil filters are currently manufactured by WIX / premium filter, not their silver or gold series.
Corresponding Amsoil #EA034 (oversize) is WIX Platinum #5156XP.
- just bought my 2000 4Runner SR5 this year, and dealer did the last oil change
- I run WIX Platinum Oil Filters, in all our vehicles now
- on wife's 2008 RAV4 Limited V6, I use Pennzoil Platinum with Wix XP filter
- after 8-10,000 Km, synthetic oil (from Natural Gas base stock) is still half of its honey color
- on my Gen3 T4R, will be using Amsoil 5W-30 and a synthetic media WIX over-sized XP oil filter

I like this site for getting together a quick list of my option before going to store.i usually pick the OEM filter and it finds all the similar filters. Saves me time on the island since there are a lot of unfamiliar generic brand filters here.

Best oil change experience yet , cut off the leg of an old pair of jeans and tucked it all around and underneath my filter . Turns out jeans are SUPER absorbent !
