Oil in an air tube???

Hey ya'all.

I am deep into a valve cover job and have a couple questions (just one for this post). I removed a hose that goes into the air housing just before the throttle body. Photo of the tube below. You can see even the outside of it looks oily. Inside this tube and just inside the area it goes into was oil.

I don't think that oil should be there??? Does anyone know how that could happen or what it means for the car. There was also what I judge to be burnt oil residue inside the plenum.

Just seems weird. Thanks for any thoughts.

Oil from the PCV outlet a few inches away. Weird it's somehow traveled upstream but I think I vaguely recall mine having a little bit in there last valve cover job. At any rate I'm willing to put money down on that being the cause

How is the PCV valve grommet and the hose? If you haven't replace those, try those (use OEM).

def replace pcv valve and grommet, and if your doing valve covers, good time to do the grommet as they ae brittle and often break ip dropping little chunks into the valve system, so doing it while vc off you eliminate that. Also use OEM as they will last years and you wont have to do again for a long time.
and remember the vc bolts are torqued to inch pounds...not foot pounds...no fun breaking off a valve cover ear and having to find a replacement

That's the vent hose for the PCV system (positive crank ventilation). Oil vapors are supposed to be directed back into the engine to be burnt off rather than vented to the atmosphere to reduce emissions. It's completely harmless just old and dirty. Like others said you'll want a new PCV valve and grommet and just give that particular hose a good clean. Chances are your throttle body is going to look rather black as well.

As was said, that is a crankcase vent hose. Normally the fresh air inlet for the engine (opposite head from the PCV valve), but can have vapors come out if there is a lot of blow-by, high load or a clogged PCV valve/hose.

Not 100% normal, but not the end of the world. Clean it up, replace the PCV valve, grommet and hose to start and see if it comes back after a clean up.

another side note.... your ICV might be getting gunked up now as well. Its up stream of that hose on the bottom of your throttle body. I have read where many just spray junk into the throttle body to clean it up....for looks...but that gook has to go someplace...and often drains into the ICV which than gunks that up The ICV is not hard to service esp if you pull off the throttle body. clean it real well. rotate the shaft and clean more.. its one more simple gasket that even napa sells....if not others. The pain is the screws that hold it on. A JAS screwdriver helps....yes it looks like a Phillips head...but has a slightly different cut to it. ( guess the JAS means Japanese something could not think of a word for the "A" or the "S" other than ahole screw) Even timmy ( videos) talks about how important in some applications a JAS screwdriver is.
