What about the 4th gen? Right in between the 5th and 3rd as far as cost and driveability, has a few creature comforts but not too many, does darn good offroad. Just as reliable as the 3rd gen with plenty of power and a roomier interior.

Great option if you like driving a dirt devil hand vac.
They really are a great rig for something a little more mid-size. They can look super badass, but definitely don't have the great look the 3rd gens do in stock form.

Oh come now, CA isn't that bad! I am two hours from the coast with beautiful beaches, or 1 hour to the high peaks of the Sierra Nevadas that still have snow on them, in July. Can't beat that!

I used to live in the Bay Area though, lots of weirdos in Berkeley and in San Francisco, but the rest is alright. Here in Sacramento we are much more level headed.

Even democrats like 4Runners though! :)

Yea, Northern Cali would be better just like Upstate NY but the Liberals still run & ruin the state. There's almost no wheelin' in NY. I have to drive 3hrs to PA to do anything technical. I dont mind Democrats, it's the far left that sucks!

You could almost temp me there with the beautiful ladies but at 50yo I have to be honest with myself. Hot babes in their 20's aren't going to be interested! I was a beach bum & a ladies man when I lived in Queens & Long Island but those days have passed. I will mention that at a BBQ 2 weeks ago a 24yo girl was flirting with me heavily (deep throating a hot dog LOL) & was great for the ego. Too bad we were with our significant others because if we were single we would have been doing the nasty!

I have to agree it is very tough to top the active traction control introduced in the 5th gens but like mentioned, way more fun with skill in the 3rd gens and the rear locker helps as necessary but rarely I have found unless you get a wheel front and rear in the air.

I'm in the process of installing an e-locker axle housing now. With all of the mods over the last three years that money could have been put towards 5th Gen car payments. :shrug: :D

My 09 Honda is still worth $10,000 , put that down on a $25,000 2014 T4R Trail Edition & my payments would be around $235 or so a month.
(not that I've though about it much):D
 
The one thing nice about the wifes tacoma is the piece of mind that I might not get stuck on the trail. With the 3rd gen approaching 300k miles and being over 20 years old its starting to scare me a bit.

Last road trip was a nightmare when my fuel pump started failing in the middle of no where and now I'm about to take it to Moab. I hope she stays together.

well, again IMHO the 4th gen grew so much from the 3rd gen and does not have the Traction Control system like the 5th gens (which is a really nice 4WD system). I just really love the compactness of the 3rd gen from a drivers ergo perspective as well as getting through the tight stuff off road. When I had my 5th gen I spent a lot of time deciding which knobs to activate (crawl control or not, snow or sand or rocks, TRAC or A-TRAC, etc) for a given condition which plays to what others have said about skill over computer control. The simplicity of the 3rd gens work well for me.

I don't like the way 4th gens look as much as 3rd gens, but I think they're fantastic trucks. I love the ride quality, and interior and power upgrades. Especially with the 4.7. I'm actually getting ready to bid on a few at the copart auctions in Denver.
